Adjusting Valves

When Wayne's book say's to tighten the adjusting screw down on the feeler gauge how tight do we tighten. I'm putting a little oil on the feeler blade and then tightening down and then wiggling the blade out. How do I know if it's to tight. It's a 73 2.4

Thanks
Mike

Mike,

I usually tighten then fairly good and have not had any problems. Use your judgment and your should be ok.

No. Absolutely incorrect.

A slight drag only.

Don't over think this process. Think about what you are trying to accomplish. If I set my valves to what I think is in spec and then I have my buddy go through them again we will arrive at the same acceptable result. This is why many mechanics use the "go, no go" process.

And don't make the mistake of tightening the screw so tight to the point where you're actually pushing the valve stem in. Your feeler gauge should just touch the valve stem, not actually push it in. Personally, the best adjustment I've been able to give my car is with using the Kirk tool.

+2 Listen to Bob!

Think of pulling your feeler gauge across a small magnet.
