Chain guides,IMS, timing off
I have an 02 996 76k and sadly last month I heard a screeching dragging noise coming from under my car, sounded like the lawn service guy next to me dragging an axel it was my IMS bearing . I shut the engine off immediately and towed it back to the shop. the engine was fine as far as valves timing but there was lot of metal filings in the motor. The mechanic was able to clean out the intermediate shaft and put a new bearing in there but didn't clean all the metal shavings out of the block. I drove the car 40 miles and all at once notice that the timing was off by the lack of power and a strange groaning coming from the motor .again I shut the motor off quickly. So far it looks as though the left camshaft pump lodged a small piece of Steel from the retaining ring and froze its self braking the flat on it so then it stopped rotating. Also with a scope it looks as though there's black plastic globs on the IMS sprocket and exhaust sprocket. Something melted ,apparently a BLACK chain tensioner or guide. The timing on the right bank is fine left side is off a little.
Question: how tough is it to replace chain guides in the left side and 2 how tough is it to reset the timing. I'm a good mechanic rebuild my 2.7 from the crank but never touched one of these things.
