'87 Euro - Is leaded gas essential?
Hi
They are discontinuing leaded fuel here in a month. I've got the Euro engine (10.5 versus 9.3 compression ratio if memory serves) and it has never had a cat. Do I need to buy a lead additive or are the valves the same as for the cat version and thus don't care about lead provided that detonation can be avoided? Thanks |

There hasn't been a problem with soft valve seats since the late 60's/early 70's I think.
If they could/would make two different styles of head (different materials for the seats) it would have cost Porsche more to make two different types of head than it would to just one.

Bruce Anderson once listed the Rockwell hardness rating for the various valves and valve seats on Porsches. From what I recall, if they are under a certain number, then unleaded would be necessary.
I remember even the earliest 914s were good enough for unleaded. I think all of the 911s were, too - certainly everything from 1970 on. In fact, I think even some of the later 356s were ok, too. |
