Will rear coilovers fit with SSI's?
Hi all
I'm thinking about getting coil-overs on my 1979 SC. The car has SSI's on it and the space looks tight b/w the dampers and the SSI's. Just wondering if anyone has put on rear coil-overs with SSI successfully. And if it doesn't just bolt in easily, any modifications to make it work? Thanks in advance |

Not sure of where I have seen it recently, possible on impactbumpers.com but they will fit with some slight modifications using a hammer if you need to put some small dents in the SSIs to clear the coils

I had this set up on my '87 and did not have to modify the SSIs at all.

Thanks for the replies... I'll put an order in for my coilovers soon. :-)

Are you reinforcing your shock towers?

FWIW,...I would never, ever install coilovers on a 911 without heavy, extensive reinforcement of the rear shock console, boxing that structure in on the front side, and a full cage that connects all of the suspension pickup points together.
Coilovers are for race cars where spring rates are required beyond the capacity of torsion bars.

Coil overs on a street car does not make for any real gain, except height adjustability. Also, as Steve has said, they are not designed to transfer the stress of the suspension at the shock tower.
Also, Steve works on these cars for a living. |

Thanks! I'll take all of that into consideration, before making any move.

Real coils do allow for significantly more droop travel then T-bars and this is especially so when using larger units at low ride heights.

The higher the spring rate the less the droop and the lower the car the less the damper needs to extend so I don't understand the last part of that. I have a low car and 31mm bars and don't have any problems. The only extra "droop" you get with coils is not really useful because the coils are completely unloaded and you only have the weight of the wheel/tire pressing it to the ground.
