Shift rod noise

I just got my shifter coupler back in today after changing the bushings. I also got the thing adjusted correctly after about half an hour of fiddling with it. Anyway, I took the car for a drive and there seemed to a new noise, like a "dink dink dink" metal noise, like something was vibrating. I'm assuming this is related to the shift rod. Did anybody else have this problem after replacing the coupler? Is so, how can it be solved? I thought that I had everything tight enough, but perhaps I didn't tighten one of the pieces correctly.

Thanks.

Did you get the bushing in the shift tunnel as well? Maybe the noise comes from the rod dangling around in it?

shift rod

The noise is more than likely being transferred back up threw the shift rod. Did you replace all the bushings like the ones in the shifter? The bushings in the coupler from the factory are oblong. The ones you might have installed are likely to be round where the pin makes contact and that will transfer more trany noise to the inside of the cabin. I’ve herd of some people strapping led weights to the shift rod to try to deaden the sound. When I did mine I must have adjusted the shifter 20 X's to try to rid it of the metallic whirling noise at low rpm. I got it better but not gone. Also my transaxel has 202K on it and in need of a rebuild. Good luck just my .02c worth. Speedy1 :D :D

Yes, I did replace all the bushings (2 in the coupler, 1 in the tunnel, 1 ball cup bushing). And, yes, I did notice that the old ones were oblong while the new ones are circular.

Guess I'll just have to live with the new noise!

Well If it helps... it will quiet a bit in time.

on a carrera the factory fix is an o-ring around the shifter shaft
tensioned with a plastic tie through the e-brake guide tube.

Mine does the same thing, it sounds like metal to metal spinning around and sometimes it sounds like it's a rattle. Different rpm's and lifting off go pedal makes this sound most of the time. I notice that after she's warmed up a bit the sound starts going away and after fully warm theres almost no sound.
I replaced shift couplers, tunnel, and ball cap. Mine were oblong also and I've adjusted about 4 times. I really didn't notice this before I did all the bushings, but she shifts much smoother now. I guess I could try the sport engine mounts and see if that would help, Maybe?

The Oring around the shift rod was for the G50's trans but I suppose it could work for a 915 as well. I would prefer to find another solution.

The shift coupler bushings I've seen have been on the tight side and required material removal to fit well.

If you've tried everything else. Try this:
Loosen the 4 bolts in the engine carrier (by the fan pulley) right in front of the fan so the engine can hang and remove any "twist" between the motor and the body. Then retighten the bolts. This may reduce the vibrations transmitted to the body some but I don't know if it will do anything for the shifter itself.

This may help. Just did all my bushings and got an increase in gear rattle/vibrations. I fixed a 2 oz. fishing weight to the rod just in front of the coupler with a small hose clamp and the noise/vibrations were gone.

I have a rattle that come and goes and have replaced every wearpart in the shift linkage to no avail. The weird thing is that if I put the trans into 5th while braking I have no rattle and while in other gears with the clutch disengaged and braking the rattle becomes more pronounced.

Try clamping one or two 1 - 2 oz. wheel balancing weights to the shift rod just forward of the coupler with a worm-gear clamp. if the noise is reduced, but not eliminated entirely ... try moving the weight(s) forward at 1/2" increments, or add more weight. The weight(s) will change the resonant frequency of the shift rod.

I will try it and If It does the trick my kids are out of the will.
