Unhappy distributor woes or maybe not?

Alrightythen....rough starting and tough to idle 2.4 '73 T. Checked the plug wires and plugs, pulled the cap off the distributor and noticed..1) on the crank pulley that things are not as I'm told they should seem...IDA carbs first...the markings on the crank are supposed to be a 5% btdc and then a Z1 notch shortly thereafter. I've got two notches "32...30" about 25% before the next pair of which the first is the Z1 and no marking on the second...followed by a single marking roughly 12% later that is stamped "EE". With the notch on the case lined up with the Z1 on the crank the rotor is a few degrees past the notch on the distributor . And if I try, there is some ability to move the rotor about 15%. Is this slop? If you grab the rotor and try to move it should this be possible? Also everywhere I've read suggests that the TDC notch is the second notch...meaning the first notch is the 5% advanced notch on the crankshaft. What are the other notches? The goal with this motor is to get it running well enough to determine what shape it's in before I start the RS conversion on the body...and decide whether to build on it or spend the bucks on a 3 ltr. Tomorrow I plan to drain and flush the carb floats with cleaner....but I could use some suggestions. Anybody seen Waynes book? Santa put mine under the Christmas tree....thanks Santa...I promise to TRY to be better next year about checking the timing on the 911's.
