Rebuild: I found where my oil went....

Well, the source of my oil consumption problem has been identified:

#2 Exhaust port, oil flowing down from the valve guide, into the port: They all look pretty much like this:

#6 piston and head, exhaust port looks about the same, but this one had a broken oil control ring. The piece is sitting on the piston skirt. Interesting thing is the spark plug didn't look any different than the others.

Other fun and games:

Oil return tube art: 3 of 4 had the same little mountain buildup of oily dirt one one end.

As I figured, my pistons are stamped KS

Anyone have a set of used 3.2 Mahle jugs they need to unload for dirt cheap?

Tom

Acknowledging your problem is the first step to recovery.

As long as your getting new cylinders, might as well bump up the bore and compression.

Wayne, my engine is an SC, so the you-ain't-got-no-knock-sensor-so don't-go-crazy-with-the-compression certainly applies, but my starting compression is a little lower to begin with. I am stuck with California piss-water premium gas though, so I am thinking 9.5:1 is about as high as I want to go. I may be overly conservative, but 9:8:1, 91 octane and a really hot day may make an unhappy combo.

At this point, I am planning on JE pistons, and sending my cylinders up to Reno to get reconditioned. The reason I want a cheap set of jugs from a 3.2 is that the guys in Reno can bore them out to 98mm, with JE pistons for a fairly economical short stroke 3.2. Combined with 964 cams and SSI's it should be a nice little motor, work with my existing CIS system and still pass Smog.

Got it Doug, thanks for the info.

For an engine that didn't drip any oil, it sure was filthy.

Nice pics Tom.

My SC's oil consumption is around 170 miles per quart. That's probably how mine looks on the inside.
