Question regarding PCA
 

Hey all and Happy Holidays!

I'm thinking about joining PCA, but since most of you I'm sure are already members, I thought I'd ask you what are some of the benefits are in joining. I am very interested in some driver's ed program and things like that so I can learn how to drive the car better. Is PCA a good thing for that sort of things? What other benefits are there? I live in So Cal (Agoura Hills), which location should I join?

I’m not PCA member yet but I’ve had my car for almost six years now and have only connected w/ other P-car owners since finding Pelican less than a year ago. I haven’t really found a reason to join yet and have a lot of the same questions as you. I know a little about the Riverside PCA- unimpressed but in fairness ignorant, and the San Diego PCA, which I know has AutoX events at Qualcom stadium that I want to get to but that’s about it.

Not much info to give here Michael but I’m curious also. When am I going to see that car of yours?

Here in the Northeast at least, the PCA's Driver Ed program is the least expensive way to go to the track and when you get there you'll meet a lot of nice people.

Ditto on Chris's reply about drivers ed. program. For many members the PCA drivers ed. vehicle is the cheapest way to get into training and track time.

I have been a member for many years and have found that the benefits of membership make it worthwhile. As example, they do provide a magazine called "Panorama" that provides some interesting information, model updates, race events, tech. notes, and technical information, etc. The local PCA chapters sends out newsletters monthly to advise of rally's, classes, racing events and general social stuff. Attending monthly meetings is your option; however, it appears a strong core group of PCA enthusiasts always attend and carries forth the banner.
What I have enjoyed are the concours classes and the events.

Its really what ever you want to make it.................but for the cost of admission, its worth the show.

The Maverick region here in Dallas has quite a few DE and autoX events each year. That is one of the chief reasons I joined.

I live close by, the region you would fall closest to is L.A., however
not much goin on as far as DE... maybe once a year. Santa Barbera region has a few more... and I think Orange Coast has the most.

I would sugust the POC (Porsche Owners Club) for DE and 'Short' track events in our area. You'll see that they have many events though the year ... with the first one the weekend of the 4/5 of Jan. ... next weekend.

Actually, it's your *region* activities and the members that make joining worthwhile (or not). If your region has enthusiastic leadership, you'll enjoy yourself.

As far as Panorama is concerned.....most issues are a disgusting waste of paper.

I'm a member. Here in the Seattle area, eight autocrosses a year, plus a practice, skill schools, DE at Pacific Raceways. Lots of seat time.

Well worth it.

Also, lots of social things if you want. Great bunch of people. If you sign up for a year, you are not commited for life. Not your thing? Don't renew.

I can second what Ed Hughes said above. Was in the Maverick PCA region for years and good group of people. They get together all the time and its a good souce for Porsche info along with the drivers events.

Need to do the same here in Phoenix but too damm busy so far!

Our Potomac PCA region rocks! It's the best $42 I've ever spent.

Go to the PCA site and take a look at what some of the regions are doing. If your region is not as active, this is your opportunity to make it rock! It's the people that make things happen. The Panorama, and local publications (Porscheforus) are icing on the cake! I go to Pelican when I need to learn/share something and to the PCA calendar when everything is in order :)

Great..now I've got more questions. So what's the difference between the PCA and POC? Who runs the Porsche Owners Club here in Los Angeles and do they have a web site you could point me to? For you local guys, which one is better to join, the L.A. PCA or the Ventura area? Or can you join L.A. and still show up at the Ventura County events?
I've seen that the driver's ed at PCA is much more affordable than going to some pro driving class where you have to pay thousands $$$. And I understand that for $42 you definitely get to meet a bunch of good people (like all of you!).

The regions in So CA, specialize in different activites.....the San Diego Region has the best LARGE club newsletter and the most AX and DEs. But they are crowded and the Board has been doing a lot of fighting and bickering lately.....I have been out of the loop lately but have heard it has calmed down a bit......they were a former region of the year....

LA region.....don't hear much about them.

Orange County region was real active in racing but has lost the track they went to a lot.....now they are using Irwindale, sometimes the full track and other times the parking lot.....

Santa Barbara region is the wine and cheese region....this year's Region of the Year....lot's of concourse and rallys....we used to have a regular AX at the local showgrounds but the bite in butt manager kicked us off in favor of out of town computer auctions that sell out of date, unwarrantied crap......ask me how I really feel.

We just started AX again at the airport in Ventura area....still part of the SB region....

The BITB just left and is working as a car wash manager or something.... and we are going to the Earl Warren Show Grounds Board in SB on 1/16/03 to appeal the decision and get back to doing it.....I have a few CHPs that are willing to show as well....if you are in the area and want to help.....contact me at 356@cox.net

Mike is right about the SB Chapter being a wine & cheese region, but I make it to the monthly breakfast and they are a nice group. At least they put up with me.
