quick engine RandR question

its been over a year since I dropped my engine . In preparation for installation I repacked my CV joints and bagged them. Can I leave them tied up and out of the way while I reinstall and bolt up engine or do I have to finagle them into place while the engine is going in ? Its been so long since I took it out I don't remember .

Just getting the engine back in for a first timer seems daunting enough without messing around with greasy CVs at the same time.

oh as a point of interest I replaced them all when I got the car in 05 at 176K kilo , car is currently at 260K and although I see some wear on them and shiny in spots they are certainly doing fine and didn't even need a repack , boots were also in excellent shape if anyone is looking for a reference point. ( I have clamps at both ends.

They should be fine as they are. Just make sure they are out of the way as you jack the engine into place (should be, just double check).

I found when I did it myself it was easier with them out, but not a big deal. Yours are easier than mine to remove as I have to get the axle nut off.
It's the throttle linkage that gets caught the most, but if you haven't put it on yet it's one less thing to worry about.

Wheel bearings get cranky w/o the stubs axles to hold it together....

suspend them while bagged as you suggested. let them hang as low as you can before being supported by the CV. I used string or zip ties so the axle is easier to manipulate around the gear box where as wire is ridged and tuff to finagle at times. a few zip ties barely engaged & chain looped makes it easy to raise the axle support by synching one up after the motor is raised.

I like them hanging low so I can get the motor in place n up about half way, stop and get the axles free below the axle flanges and gearbox, then raise the motor into place while the axles hang below. the zip ties also when synched help you hold the thing in place to align to install the cv bolts.

Sorry, I assumed that the axles were completely out. Never mind....do as suggested ^^^

that's a solo reinstall... a helper to work the axles as the motor raised is priceless....


also, a tight zip tie or even two thru a couple of the cv bolt holes aids keeping it as one with the boot & distorting while you fiddle with it. bummer is you have a bunch of grease zip ties to clean up n deal with when yir done..

It will be a solo install. So will take my time.
