Frozen Distributor
1978 911 coupe
While setting the ignition timing, I could not get the vacuum to advance when I put a hose to the Advance Mechanism. I decided to follow Gunter's blog about cleaning the Distributor. The vacuum can tested out OK after removal. I believe I have an issue with the Magnetic Pulse generator housing. Isn't the two halves "A" and "B" in the illustration below supposed to move freely? Mine are frozen tight. If my assumption is correct, this would explain the issue with the vacuum advance. Any suggestion on how to free the two halves? ![]() |

You can see the movement of the pockets near where the vacuum unit arm hooks up. Replaced the distributor in 1997. These are the old guts. I am fairly certain the vacuum unit could not have moved it. It took a screwdriver and light leverage to rotate it a bit. Sitting for 19 years though.

Bob, Thanks. I'm probably going to ship it off to PartsKlassic for rebuild. There are a lot of other things going on with the Dizzy and I sometimes give my self a DIY pass when I have other things to do.

Advise on how it goes. I have this rebuildable distributor and a set of 964 cams on the shelf. Would be nice to mate them with the help of a pro.
