Schnoor washers reusable?
Are the schnoor washers on driveshaft/cv joint bolts one time use only? Thanks!

In my experience and research...I wouldn't even reuse the cv joint bolts over again a second time. Nothing worse than the axle coming off and digging into the ground....if'n ya know what I mean !
This may be overly cautious, but any bolt that has been torqued a first time may not have the same tightening characteristics a second time. Notice that most people are advised to re-torque a new Cv bolt after the first 100 miles of running..or at least check torque values again. This issue may be of little concern on non-critical applications, but like head bolts, I would consider Cv joints "critical" IMHO..... Wil Ferch

Yeah, Wil, I know what you mean. I lost two reused bolts and snapped one off in the hub the other day. I even checked the torque on them this summer after last years axle rebuilds. I'm convinced the old bolts are the reason things came apart on me. Have new bolts to install and was wondering where can you get those schnoor washers. Didn't see them here at Pelican.

No. The washers are not reusable. DO a search, Early-S-Man posted a link to a supply house were you can buy a box of a hundred for cheap.

Do not reuse the Schnoor lock washers; replace them. They are inexpensive. Pelican sells them individually (for example: K-523-103-01 or J-027-015-02) at a reasonable price.

If you cant find the hardware at Pelican, tryMcMaster-Carr or Maryland Metric. Between the 2 you should be able to find the most obscure metric hardware that you could imagine.
Most high strength bolts should not be reused, or they may be retensioned once, but a third use is not recommended. it also depends on the application of the bolt. whether it is acting in shear, or tension, or a combination of stresses. Bolt science has some info on fasteners, as does AISC Some of the reading can be mind numbing, but tells the story of fasteners etc..
