Lighted key head pulled off key blankin ignition

I went to remove my key and the lighted head component pulled off the metal key itself. I was able to grab the key with my fingernails and remove it. I've disassembled the key but don't see how the key blank gets retained by the black plastic. It slides in and out without ever clicking into any tab. Should I force it or is something broken and its time for a new key?
Borrowed pic - in my situation, the key blank is free from the plastic head.

There is a plastic retainer, look closely and it will look like a square tab or your may have dropped out.

Thank you Draco. Didn't see that removable tab thing until you posted. Done!

^^^^^
Yup, that's what I used.
You will need two Duracell 389/390 batteries or equivalent.
