Pelican JPG Squisher
Hope this is not too OT. I remember a post where Pelicanites where having trouble importing pictures to Waynes GREAT site because of size. Here is some freeware that will compress your shots so you can post them and is VERY easy to use:
http://www.dreamscapesoftware.com/products/soft_jpeg.html My Nikon D1X tends to make very LARGE jpgs even at its lowest shooting resolution. Here is my P-CAR in compressed JPG using this software. Jason 88 911 Cab |

Not a matter of size but resolution that is killing you. Set your screen resolution higher and typical pictures will be smaller. (So will text, though)

Squishing
Thanks for the link. My pics were too large and have kept me
from posting a pic of my project since I found this place in Oct. Thanks!

tdowling,
Its Christmas... you can get a 17 or 19 inch monitor for under $150 now. Splurge and upgrade your system and you will be a lot happier. Even with my 21 monitor I still have to scroll at times but not often. Joe

I spent my wad this Winter on Magnecor Wires, Bilstein Struts, BBS wheels, track tires....and I had enough left over for a 32oz fountain soda from the Mobil Mart....not enough for a monitor though. Guess I have to continue scrolling.

Try www.pricewatch.com or www.tigerdirect.com when you save a bit of money. The larger monitors are not real expensive now that LCD displays are out.

I monitor my wife's website and can tell you that the majority (more than 2/3 of the hits) of the world seems to be stuck at 800x600 which is sad these days (next from that is 1024x768 at about 1/5). My guess is most people don't know how/why to change their resolution, but also many are probably working with really low-end hardware. When posting pics to something like this board it is probably best to consider 640x480 to be the max res.

Isn't just as easy to just resize the pic in any editing software and then send it on its way? I personally don't like to shift side to side to see pictures. Even with a 19" monitor and 1024x768 size, the image is still way over. Pity those 15" monitor users!

There are a couple of different issues here:
Image Size and Image Resolution. Compress is another. Image Size is Physical (think inches). Resolution refers to the amount of detail captured in the image. The two are somewhat related, but can be manipulated independently. For Web viewing, you only need a resolution of 75 dpi (dots per inch). For printing, 300 dpi would be better, 150 sometimes works if the image is not too big. So - you use your photo editing software to change the size of the picture so it fits neatly into a Pelican page. You can also adjust the resolution so it is not so large. .jpg files are "compressed" to reduce the physical file size. Think of the picture of the white car - the image file says "at this point, the next 500 pixels will be white.", instead of repeating the same white spot 500 times (this is a grossly simplified illustration). They are "uncompressed" by whatever image viewer you are using (e.g. IE). So Ron, you adjust the size and or resolution before you post it. Pelican (or more accurately, its bbs software) does not do anything to the image file (that I'm aware of). Jason - D1X, nice camera! You can adjust the size of the image in your camera (VGA, XGA, Full) - so if you are going to just post file, use VGA and the picture will be 640x480 in size). But since you have the horsepower, take it full, then edit appropriately in your photo editor. I've probably created more confusion than less...

I believe that most people that I know are pushing their hardware to the limits of what it will do. I can believe that most hits on a website are of vga type resolution numbers.
I was once told that if I bought a camera for e-bay type work it made a lot more sense to look for one that could provide good close in work and could focus at very short distances than it was to get one that could provide very high resolution. The reasoning was, that people hitting websites wanted the pics to load fast. The ability to focus at close distance was to provide good detail for the pics for people to make buying decisions. However, I'm still looking for the ideal camera. Good luck, David Duffield |

"a camera for e-bay type work"
It's tough to beat a cheap Sony Mavica for this type stuff. It will focus as close as you can hold it (lighting, however, is the problem with any camera at super-close range). The Infolithium battery is the best in the industry. The lense is decent and some have 10X optical zoom. The floppy disk storage is as easy and quick as it gets and no problem for relatively low resolution eBay pics. If you've got a Sony Outlet store nearby, they've got factory reconditioned versions starting at around $200. -- Curt |
