70S Vacuum Retard Disconnected
I think this one should be easy to answer - I noticed that the vacuum retard on the distributor of my 70S has no hose connected to it and that the vacuum point on the left MFI stack was uncapped yet the car drives fine except idles a little high (1100 rpm) when warm. Why would the previous owner disconnect the retard mechanism? Anything to be gained from hooking it back up? Maybe a lower idle?

Since you have a 70s that is worth a small fortune, I say put it back to stock. Some will disconnect these as they feel the car runs better. 1,100 is pretty high, check all the rods making sure the rack springs back fully and there is no binding. If they are in order, synch the stacks and bring down the idle some.

i think it actually sounds better with the retard connected.
I look at it as part of the advance, not a retard. the only real drawback that I know of is it can run hotter AT IDLE. but it takes quite a while for the temp to go up depending on the timing. you get into the 15 to 20 ATDC range and it can raise the idle temp on hot days. BUT, the temp should come back down after you have been moving for a while. it will also lean the mixture at idle with less advance. so for CIS guys that want to run richer at WOT less idle advance is a way to richen it up so it will idle without surging. I like the tone, it gets deeper and smoother with the timing "less advanced" at idle.
