Actually I was asking about the quantitative difference. How many pounds?

Chuck I took the doors off my '69 911 and weighed them on my incredibly acccurate bathroom scale..

The doors weighed #65 each

The glass "nascar" door I replaced the stock doors with weigh #8 each

So 130 minus 16

thats an easy loss of 114 lbs....

but to protect myself I needed to put door bars in the ccage.... so Ill give back 50 lbs for door bars....

still its a #100 loss

I also replaced the hood (less another #25) and re skinned the roof

Stupid reply deleted....

I'm not positive Chuck, but I was told 16 pounds a door. I suppose it could be 8 pounds per door beam an16 pounds total. I'm really not sure on this.

For some reason I really like the look of the swiss cheese rear bumper (post '74 style). I can't find a picture right now, but I'm sure I've seen it' maybe on a 935 or some other racer. No bumper pads or rubber deco, just 5 or 6 big holes right across the back. Of course that doesn't apply to Jacks next car, maybe I'll end up there some day.

Here tis...

that big "swiss cheese" bumper doesnt have those big holes for weight reduction

The holes are to vent the air collected under the car...reducing positive pressures under the car is a good thing..

Tyson Schmidt 12-31-2002 05:59 PM

Uh.. Mark? That's not Jack's car!

That's another widebody car that Kevin is doing.

Jack's car is an RSR replica. Early front end, early RSR rear bumper, etc.

Damn, I wish we were that far along!

masraum 12-31-2002 05:59 PM

I thought that might be secondary. Guess I had it backwards; learn something new every day.

Mark Wilson 12-31-2002 06:21 PM

I thought that something was fishy there. I officially rescind the Platypus remark.

Hey Jack,

I'm a Tom Petty fan, too. Apparently, your reference was lost on the youngsters! :)

Okay, it's 3AM in Chicago, just got back from New Years festivities at my mechanics house, and now I'm checking pelican. It's a sickness I tell you!

I'M GOING TO BED!

Adam 01-01-2003 03:53 AM

Chris, I didn't know that your RS was street registered (if indeed it is). Isn't/wasn't it a track-only car?

cstreit 01-01-2003 09:00 AM

Adam,

It isn't... but when you have to put some heat in a set of tires, your license plate and registration from your 930 JUST MIGHT find it's way on to the back of the racecar...

However, this year I am going to plate and insure it for a month in order to put some road miles on the new motor... A few hundred for the break-in on the street rather than trying to do this on the race track like last time.

In fact, I think a local R-Gruppe drive would be just such an opportunity to break in the new motor. i.e. lots of shifting and varied loads/RPM, and lots of willing mechanics around in case something happens.

I thought about doing this if there was one in Michigan or Indiana, but with no creature comforts, that 3 hour drive over there would probably wear me out..

The source on the 911R-style fiberglass plates says he will sell additional sets for $50 a pair, plus shipping from South Africa. This is a specialty item, so he's not going to get rich at that price. I think he's working on also getting a source for the Hella light assemblies, although I don't know what he'll charge for those.
