Super headache repair coming up...

Tonight on the way to Marcesq's house for some good old fashioned brake bleeding, I noticed an intense gas smell and it was coming from the front of the car. We got her jacked up, removed the belly pan and saw the line with the banjo fitting on the passenger side of the fuel pump leaking about 3" above the fuel pump. It only happens when the car is running, but it's a steady drip and it's not because of a loose banjo fitting. I probably have to replace that line and it looks like a real b!tch of a job. Has anyone out there done this and how bad was it? Thanks.

Richard, ya gotta stop taking those speed bumps at 60! Just kidding...sorry to hear about this new glitch. Could this be related in some way to the fuel pump problem you had earlier?

maybe a new pair of crushwashers on the banjo fitting? Might be worth a try?

Wasn't there just a post about an engine fire.... Yeep, it was MFI but still, fuel leaks in general would CONCERN me. (It reminds me I should give up smoking)

Sorry Richard to hear that. I have never done this replacement before but I would get on with it right away,

Ingo

I wish that were all, but the leak is coming from ABOVE the banjo fitting.

Hmmh..why do all the people replace the fuel hoses with original and with those dreadful and sooo "wonderful" banjo fittings.

Straight silicone (fiberglass reinforced) hoses directly from the tank, whats the problem with those??

Personally I replaced those metal tubes with rubber/silicone hose which is attached to fuel tank with these adjustable fittings that are on around the rubber/silicone fuel hose -> No contact to metal at any point -> No vibration -> No fear that they will start to leak.

These kinda "fittings" are easy to take off (if necessary) and also pretty failproof because there is insulating rubber between metal contacts.

My fuel pump is mounted in smugglers box

If banjo fitting is "bend" in any way, it will start leaking. -> They suck big time. Besides if it starts to leak with full tank, its a ***** to repair.

20$ of silicone/rubber hose compared to expensive original metal tubes with failure prone fittings...hmm...wonder which one I should choose??

Sory to hear about your leak. I helped a fellow pelicanite change his fuel pump. We did it with fuel in the tank. Dumped about 3/4 to 1 gallon of fuel out when moving the lines.

It is cramped up in there and I would imagine the rubber fuel lines are pretty well stuck to the fuel tank. Good luck and I would drain the tank of any remaining gas before I did any work.

have a happy new year

Richard,
Must be the season!
Just confirmed that my fuel pump has died. Racing over to Porsche of Arlington today to pre-pay, which gets the PCNA $100 deal on a new pump - $212 -$100 = $112, which is the best deal around.

FWIW, those b*astards at HBL wanted $268, and refused the honor the coupon unless the pump was in stock. Dicks.

Gee whiz guys. You can get a Bosch fuel pump at Olympic Auto here for around $159. I guess if you have a PCA coupon burning a hole in your pocket, then the dealer is ok too. Tony, grab an extra piece of tubing or hose at Pep Boys, as the connection to your fuel pump may be a bit frayed or brittle. Marc and I replaced that part when we did my fuel pump.
