911 in the snow...

Was up at Tahoe over Christmas with the Porsche - lots of snow, lots of fun, a chilly passenger compartment and fogged up windows (all part of the experience). And a tendency of the engine to idle really low (at about 500 rpm), then shoot up to about 3000, go down again and so forth for a while until it finally went out. On the way back the car took to idling consistently at about 3000. I let it sit overnight and drove it today, and everything is back to normal - car idles sweetly at just under 1000 as it should. What on earth was going on?

Wow a Citroen CX in the US. That must be a pretty rare car over there? TRD is that a Diesel?

Can someone please help me post a photo here of my car in the snow? I cannot get it to upload as a jpeg or a bitmap. Thanks.

Mikkel - yes the CX is a Turbodiesel (120 hp), a great car. There actually are a couple of them in the bay area. Mine is at my family's place in Germany though, waiting for me if I ever return.

Could be altitude sickness! - I heard it was common in some fuel injection systems

I tend to agree.

During our Big Bear drive a couple months ago, some of the cars acted strangely at the 7000 ft. elevation. I think Tahoe is higher than that... all problems ceased when we dropped to sea level again.

Apparently CIS does not like thin air, from what I've read here recently. I just drove over the Colorado Rockies twice in my '84 BMW, (11,000+ ft.), w/ motronic injection, car didn't feel any different from sea level. Got some crazy gas milage in the mountains, like 30mpg @ 100mph. Why is this?

Do you still have your AAV (not AAR) connected? If so that's probably the culprit. The CIS system does surge when it's cold, but to get to 3,000 rpm something has to be opening on the air side. Does your car ever backfire at startup?

One of my other vehicles...

I'll second the tons of snow up in the Sierras. Just got back, having spent Saturday - Monday up there. Aside from the chain controls both ways, a blast was had by all. First time both my kids had seen that much snow falling at one time.

This was taken Sunday morning, 12/29 at Tahoe City -- luckily the snow was very light, so digging out wasn't too much trouble. Not sure the p-car would have been up to it, given the depth of the snow...
