Brushed silver vs flat black

In the 80's, Porsche used 2 different colors for their emblems. Brushed silver and flat black.

I have seen 911's, 944's, etc like this. Mostly 944's though - has 1 of the 2 colors on their rear panel, "944"

Does someone know why they used two different colors? Or was that just a personal preference when somebody bought the car? Someone told me that the brushed silver was an anniversary edition, but I know that cannot be true.
