Determining when a CV joint is done

I a rebuilding a 968 racecar that has 930 CVs. One of the CVs seems a bit loose, but I'm not sure how to judge if it's OK to use. No obvious damage, it had grease still in it, and the boot looks fine. The car came to me in non-running condition, so I don't know if it was noisy/clunking. What's the best way to bench test a CV? Thanks.

I'd take it apart clean it up and inspect.
Shiny spots can be reused if you feel comfortable but if it's broken through into the casting its junk.

And if the joint is visually OK, how much slop is acceptable in a CV joint (when assembled)?
