Does the Wevo Shifter have a gate?

Hi, I'm pretty happy with my 915 for street use although on occasion getting the stick into a next gear requires some effort. Bushings and Wevo PSJ, yes. While I'm in research mode the Wevo Shifter and Gate have been catching my eye. Truth be told I'm not bothered by the 915's lack of structured shift pattern or preventative lockouts, so a gate has never really been on my radar. My main goal is to improve the success rate of each shift; taking off at after a red light not being able to get into second gear while coasting through an intersection stinks.

I'm going to buy the Wevo positive shift joint, that is a given. As I look at the bushings up front (cheap), I see Wevo has a shifter and gate (expensive) that I have a couple of questions about.

Does the Wevo Shifter have a gate in it? If so, would having one make the Wevo Gate redundant? Or is there good reason to have both?

Cheers

My understanding is that the Wevo shifter does not include a gate in the shift mechanism. It does include additional spring-loading to center the shifter in the 3-4 plane in addition to the normal spring detent to reach 5th and reverse.

The Wevo gate kit installs on the shift fork cover of the transmission and places the gate internal to the trans. You can use the gate kit with a regular shifter.

The wevo gate system is installed inside the transmission, it's seperate from the shifter and they are meant to work together.

Ok, the two products don't share duties. I never have problems 'finding' gears or inadvertently selecting the wrong one so there doesn't seem to be a need for a gate. To help resolve these shifting problems it sounds like I'm looking at either the Wevo Shifter and PSJ (expensive), or replacement bushing and PSJ (cheap). Since I'm not 100% sure what's causing the issue maybe I should go for the bushings and PSJ, if the problem still exists I'll be glad to have saved that money to put towards a transmission rebuild (doing the retainer bearing plate along the way).

Read my threads. If you're having problems finding a gear a short shifter is going to make it worse not better. The WEVO gateshifter will piss you off unless you're looking to rebuild everything.

Do only the bushings, adjust it and see what happens FIRST

Yea, not having problems finding gears... not considering a Wevo Gate. However getting 'into' gear (ie. 2nd) is sometimes an issue that I could see a short shifter exacerbating due to lost leverage (although I never 'force' it). Happens maybe 1 in 10 times and seems dependant on having the correct rpm just before the stick is due to drop into a geared position. If I don't get it right she won't go into gear so I let everything out in neutral and try again. Going to order bushings now!

Sounds like bushings / coupler. The trans mounts can cause problems as well.

You should make sure that the shifter itself is adjusted and does not have any unusual play. I have seen a thread on "blueprinting" a shifter, but can't find it now.

I have a factory short shifter, from an '86, IIRC. Not real short like the kits, but IMO just right.

I also have the Seine gate system added. I highly recommend it. It adds the spring loaded 1-2 gate, so you know what gate you are in. It is adjustable so you can make it stiff or just light enough to feel the gates. The gate itself is optional, but adds that little bit of security.

Seine Shifter Mod ..and ..coupler whisperer replacement bushes......cheap and works great.

I can't speak to the Wevo because I have no experience with it but the board loves it.

I had both Seine and Wevo, one in each car. After driving them back to back for years I replaced my Seine for another Wevo. The Wevo is the best, every shift is 100% all the time.

On that note I use the Wevo PSJ in one car and a stock coupler in the other, the Wevo is noticeably more precise.

Isn't difficulty getting into 2nd symptomatic of worn synchros?

I have a Seine and Ed's shifter bushings (sorry to say I think they are NLA from Ed). Adjusting the coupler and the Seine and the coupler is a bit fiddly to get it all lined up at first. I have done my car and replaced the bushings on a buddy's car (no Seine). His was a bit easier to get right the first time but he has no gating.

I love everything about my setup except the shift from 1st to 2nd. That's what people always talk about with the 915. My buddy's car is a little easier but he has also had a transmission rebuild and I suspect my original synchros are a little worn.

I did all three (shifter, coupler, and internal gate) and it is fantastic. Some cautioned about the internal gate being difficult because it requires you to be precise in your shifting. Diagonally slamming the lever between gears will make you hit the gate. I guess I either did all right ever since or this was an exaggeration.

Installation of the internal gate is a little involved. I believe it could be done with the transmission in the car but mine was out and apart for swapping the main shaft. So the install didn't add too much work. Adjustments were easy and I couldn't be happier with the way the 915 shifts. Money well spent.

Had the Wevo gate in my '73 911 for 8 years or so and love it. Well worth the money in my opinion.

I think it would be tricky to install the Wevo gate with the transmission intact except for the plate on the bottom. The gate part is easy, but You have to remove the shift dongle and replace it, and it is attached to the main shift shaft with a pin which I think is a press fit. Would call for ingenuity to press it out, and to press it or a replacement back in to hold the Wevo part.

Thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated!
