3.6 Conversion Questions - Installation Has Started
 

Hi,

I hoping to hear from some people that have done this before. I am (fianally!) putting my 964 engine into a 77 911S. I will have some basic questions that I have searched for the answers, but have not found. Some questions are are incredibly basic.

1. What did you use to fasten your coils to the engine bay walls? Rivets?

2. Where have you put your ECU? I assume most have placed it under the seat, but what was used to fasten/mount it?

Mine has the coils mounted to an aluminum plate on the drives side where the fuses etc go, and my ECU is under the seat. the person who did mine cut the hole for the wiring right near the floor, I would have run it higher to precept from water intrusion etc. Mine is a 75 911S with a 964 motor.

OK, so the OEM aluminum plate is good. I will use rivnuts to fasten the coil bracket to them.

Chris, is your 964 MAF mounted on an angle? Mine has to be on an angle to fit, otherwise it is obstructed by the the plastic intake (plenum).

Sboxin, I have read about your installation. Did you use rivnuts?

No, just a Nylock nut and bolt - - there is a black metal plate behind the coils that bolts to the car.

mine are mounted to the carrier- just a different way/idea.
as far as the ecu goes, I am mounting mine under the drivers seat- seems safe and out of the way there.

Sboxin, did you drill the hole? Thanks for putting up with the simple questions.

I made up a panel for the ECU and DME relay and mounted that under the driver's seat (raised off the floor too).

I bought the Patrick Motorsports air filter kit. The fit is less than perfect, but I am sure I can get it to work. The engine is mildly modified (Cup cams, 993 injectors, 993 intake, 993 flipped flange headers and a Steve Wong chip to match everything together). What did you guys go with as far as the air filter is concerned?

I skipped the cone conversion and used a modified factory airbox. I had to cut off a bit of the right side of the airbox to clear the decklid hinge. Takes up a bit more space making the engine bay seem more cluttered, but it works well.

Also modified stock air box and paper filter - a lot of dust here in the very dry desert . . .
We are focused on the long term engine durability . . .

No, engine builder guy - Roland - and yes he drilled 2 holes in the inside fender well to mount the coils. I don't have the patience to do the wiring . . . The cost of the labor for the engine rebuild, new wiring and Patrick conversion parts and engine install and testing was about $8K

Sboxin, I agree about the wiring. It is not fun.

Sboxin, yours looks like 3.2 box. Perhaps I will get the 964 OEM and see how to make it fit.

I mounted the DME with rubber isolators.

I mounted the DME behind the driver seat, rather than under it. So I have some (limited) access without removing the seat.

I also mounted 2 relays next to each other: primary and spare.

Was hoping to be farther along than I am. My wiring harness is for a 993. I need the 964 DME and engine harness.

Harnesses can be hard to find.

Damaged wires can be repaired easily enough.

I think I have a 964 engine harness. It's the one with the injector connectors right?
