Shifter issues

The past few days I noticed my shifter was acting funny, very loose left to right although all gears worked. Today I went to adjust the coupler and after many tries cannot get into 5th and reverse. With this I removed the shifter and found that the shift rod bushing is totally destroyed. My question is would this cause my problem and if so why did it shift in all gears before I found the problem? Thanks for the help.

Well, before you tried to adjust it was still aligned, but now it is out of alignment due to the slop in the bushing. Replace both the shaft and ball bushings.

Just did this job with an 86. Make sure ball cap bushing is on the shifter end before putting it back together then re-adjust the coupler.

Draco--I thought I changed all my bushings about a year ago somehow I missed this one. Waiting on the part and thanks

Sometimes guys forget to pop on the ball cap bushing, that will destroy it in short order.

Wait are your talking about the horizontal input bushing.

Post a pic if you can or part number.

I replaced the top one but the bad one is the bottom photo. It split in two pieces as if I have two bushings

Well while you are there check the ball cap bushing just to make sure

That is exactly how my problem began that I am talking about on the thread about losing all the gears. I readjusted last night probably another twenty times and cannot get it properly adjusted. I replaced the cup and the shift linkage bushing like you and it just won't get right.

The essence of my problem is that I cannot get both 2nd and 3rd to engage properly - I can have one, but not the other. The movement that solves one of them deteriorates the other. I am running out of ideas.
