1966 912 with 911T motor
I was at a bday party for a fellow pca member. I was sitting across from his son in-law who mentions he has a 1966 912 with a 911T motor for sale. So I hushed him up quickly so others wouldnt find out about it. We chatted briefly about the car and exchange numbers. It is a so-called barn fine.
Now my question is, would it be worth restoring. I currently own a 86 911, and a 95 993. The 86 is goin to need some custom wheels coming up soon and I really really prefer to have a 356. But i also like the look of the long hoods. Yes what is a thread without pics, I have to upload from my phone since he text the pictures to me. so they will follow after I submit this thread.

Motor turns by hand, so the engine is good.

It really depends on the price?
It looks pretty rough from the pictures. The value is not so much with the 911T motor, but the SWB body. How much rust?

The body doesnt really have rest or the belly. Its the front end area is where the problem is. I am goin to be taking more pics of the car. Over all the body is good its the front end which it came with the replacement sheet metal for it.

Man, that looks pretty clean, rust wise, but the front pan on mine was totally gone, and it looked cleaner.
Scooter is right - it totally depends on price. It's not a SWB 911 - which we all know are going for the sky in terms of price - and it's not a SWB 912, which (almost surprisingly) seem to be languishing in their values in the high teens to high 20's. Which, for a buyer, IMO, makes it a great purchase. You get all the bennies of a SWB 911, without any of the consequences of not keeping it 100% original. Buy it, fix it, mod it, drive it. Someday, you can sell it, and likely for more than you have in it. Maybe.

It being a swb 912 doesn't carry much value?

It all depends on your perspective. I think that 3 gauge cars are very cool and should be preserved. But the hot-rodder in me thinks you should do what you want.
Honestly, as long as you don't do any more cutting and modifying that can't be reversed, I think it is a win-win. Of course, the 356 outlaw guys are shunned by almost all the 356 resto guys sooo...

What does your heart say? I have two longhoods and now want a swb car someday. Since I like the 3.2's, I'll likely go SWB 912 myself since a non number matching hot rod is more what it is than what it was. I know this isn't penny for penny, but you also don't live with guilt of cutting up a swb 911. I do feel some regret from cutting my 72' up a little before they were "special" , or rather big money.
UNTIL the day, there might be new shells made. It's almost the curse of Porsche building so well originally. MG, XKE, Healeys and Mustangs are all offered, but will Porsche ever let it happen?

Interesting - I hadn't thought of a repro body for a 911 yet, but with the prices going up...
IMO, what does Porsche have to say about it? Its like a tie rod or a brake pad. They can't prevent someone from making a replacement panel. This panel just happens to be the whole tub. THe community, however, will likely judge, very critically, the quality of the reproduction. Interesting...

The last picture is of the replacement pan for the rusted area, Which is under the battery. That is basically the only rust that is bad enough to change. The rest is surface rust

this is a very desiderable early 912. You can tell it from the three gauges. I think a proper restoration would be worth.
