3.2 Component Question

Recently acquired 85 Carrera Cab and I'm trying to figure out and better understand the function of this component in the front trunk next to the battery. It appears to be a blower to provide airflow to a cooler (AC, oil ???) below the floor pan.
Any input is appreciated, especially comments as to the effectiveness/necessity.

Looks look an aftermarket alarm siren or horn.

Correct. Blows air through the front AC condenser

It's one of those items that's "unfused" and can cause a fire if it shorts out. There's a fuse available to prevent a problem.
Double check, but I believe this will fit your '85; 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe - Switches, Motors, Relays, Fuses & Wiring - Page 3

Fuse panel......

The front condenser fan and the evaporator fan are probably pulling power from the same fuse (19 from front of panel). If you have a spare switched fuse (20 was vacant on my car), split the load by moving one lead to the other fuse. Again, on my car, that was the only fuse that pulled nearly 25 amps with the a/c running. Split the load and you should be able to run a 15 amp fuse in each location and keep everything nice and cool. Good luck!

Being a CAB and depending where you are located, you can remove all the AC crap and enjoy a lighter car...

On Carrera's through 1986 that fan has NO fuse whatsoever, and has been known to cause fires. You need either the part jlex referenced or else an inline fuse holder from your local FLAPS for a fix.

Yea, I would disconnect the wires at the connection until you get the fuse in there.

If your AC works at all, get that fan fused and connected ASAP.

Foot well Blowers and Gauge Lights too while you are at it.

Forgetting for a moment the good advice about the fuses, is this blower mainly for hot days being stuck in traffic (top up & AC on) when there's little airflow across the AC condenser?

It is always on when ac is turned on
