Vent my spleen

I am so sick and tired of these prices. I have owned a 911 for twenty three years. why is Porsche bending over its most loyal customers. $1500 for a muffler?? are you kidding?? screw them. My wife says if I want a 65 corvette then I must sell the Porsche. she has been saying that for a decade... maybe it is time????? a fuel pump is $50. German *******s. yes I said it....

You could by a M&K muffler from our host instead. They are about seven or eight hundred and well made. Or source a second hand one with plenty of life left in it from the classifieds.

Consider buying Porsche parts is your way of contributing to their race program.

I think I'll probably be excommunicated - but I too couldn't stomach the price for a muffler. Even an M&K at 750 is absolutely outrageous.

I went to my indie muffler shop, and for 200 bucks cash in 30 minutes I had a nice new flowmaster welded perfectly in place with a fresh stainless tip bent and welded on. I know I'm not the only one, as I found a bunch of track rats doing the same thing when I was looking for alternatives.

You just have to be willing to be shunned from the majority of the purists for such a crazy idea though. A muffler is a muffler though, as long as it's not too restrictive it's purpose is to reduce the exhaust signiture. It doesn't need to be made out of platinum.

And how long did your old one last ?

When things stop being fun, maybe it is time to consider other options. Lately, I tend to think about what it is I want out of my car hobby, and what would satisfy those desires.
But I understand that it isn't the world that is changing, I am changing.

interesting comment, and I understand. after quite a few years accumulating and wrenching on a few older porsches, starting to wonder what my 'end game' will be. still tearing down a 78 SC / 930 conversion for full tub up rebuild. probably another 1-2 yrs before it is done.

turned 65 this year and heading to the Corvette test track in Bowling Green, KY for a DE this weekend. I am thinking I may have another 5 good years left before I have to really slow it down..... then there will be more time for fishing.

this stuff has really gotten to me.

Buy a used one for a couple hundred bucks? Seems you've already thrown in the towel regarding Porsches. I hope a Corvette fills your needs. Tim

I had a Dynomax on one of my cars, and it flowed well.

I used a Flo-Pro on my SC and got many compliments on the sound.

The factory 1in-1out muffler is for sale if you are interested.

What does GM want for an exhaust system for a '65 vette I wonder?

Get a Magnaflow muffler fabbed up. Lots of threads here on these. They sound great, are light and don't break the bank.

I agree with the OP in principal but also love seeing Porsches win in WEC and the Weathertech series, so looking at it this way makes me feel better.

You know,....its funny,..I was thinking about that very same question.

There are reasons and while you might not like them, its the reality of 2016 & beyond.

1) Porsche makes MUCH MUCH smaller quantities of air-cooled parts now. Its not just them, every manufacturer has adopted the same "Just-in-time" method of inventory control. This forces cost amortizations over a far smaller run of parts than what they did 23 years ago, never mind what they did when your car was built.

2) Wages have not remained stagnant in most parts of the World. You are not earning the same wage you did 23 years ago (hopefully), neither does anyone else.

3) Overhead costs haven't remained stagnant either,....it costs more now for local taxes, utilities, health care, raw materials, etc.

Lastly, you ought not to forget that Corvette (Chevrolet) parts were/are made in FAR bigger numbers simply due to the vast numbers of those cars and commonality with the rest of the product line. Any comparisons between GM products and Porsche products is invalid, simply due to production volumes of cars and parts.

Yessir,..you can certainly fit a cheaper muffler to your car, but I assure you its NOT the same thing in terms of performance or longevity. Like many other things in life, you do get what you pay for.

I'm in this industry and while I deplore the current situation as much as you do, I'm not ready to drive a Kia simply to relieve myself of the expense of ownership. Some experiences in life are rewarding beyond $$$ or words.

I have the same on the supercharged car...I get compliments all day long on how great it sounds.

But I also have a M&K on another car and it is a very nice piece. And an OEM original 2-in-1-out that is still solid and sounds great at 46 years of age.

Buy and maintain a 928 for five years.

You won't think 911 parts are expensive at all. You'll be happier. Worked for me.

I agree with Steve. I'm not ready for a KIA as yet. My project SC has come along slower than I would like and I would really like to be driving it, but the prices are an issue in that. But am I still enjoying working on it? You bet. Better than golf, fishing, etc. for me. Anything but the car (and maybe shooting) would bore me to death! The

I've only had my 72 911 for 18 years and it's not going to be replaced by anything. Now it's been joined in the garage by a couple of my old favorites. A year ago when I retired it was joined by a Classic Mini Cooper and just this week by a 65 Corvette roadster.
