cis airplate question

question about 79 sc that's running rich strong exhaust smell. so I open the airbox while engine was running and push up on the level plate and the engine started running smoothly but a little high idle. long story short. pushing up on the level is richening are lean. I know how to adjust with the alley wrench .. but I'm a little confused about the level thing. thank you very much.

After I renewed my CIS and got it started, I though I was running rich too because of the strong fuel smell out of the exhaust, I bought a LM-1 and did an actual test and I was super lean!

I wonder if it is too lean, maybe the fuel doesn't completely burn?

OK.... I will check the plugs tomorrow and report back thank you.

Air plate moving up under constant throttle enrichens the mixture. (More plate rise equals more fuel flow.)

Wonder no longer. Incomplete combustion indicated by high hydrocarbon levels is because it's lean. Richening mixture makes HC level go DOWN. I used to set cars up to pass emissions when our county had emission screenings.
