Startup after 1 year? ('78 SC)
 

My 1978 SC has had to sit for 6 months a couple of times when I have been deployed. Each time I put it up on blocks, hooked up the trickle charger and it always started right up.
This time it has sat for 1 year. Is there anything I should do before starting, given the extra time?

I would probably disconnect the coil and crank for a minute or so to ensure oil pressure builds up before I allowed her to fire off. Hopefully you also treated the fuel with stabilizer, if not, I would drain tank and lines and start fresh. Today's fuel does not stay "good" for long.

And yes, it got a dose of Sta-Bil.

First, thank you for your service. As far as waking up an engine that has been stored, I like to spray some aerosol lubricant like Tri-flow into the cylinders before cranking it. It takes a while before any lubricant reaches the cylinders bores as the piston squirters don't open until oil pressure is above idle and you don't get much oil slinging off of the rod big ends at cranking speed. Also, I would make sure that the oil is light enough to get good flow out to the cams and rockers during those crutial few seconds. A lot depends on the ambient temperature as well. Best of luck!

Of course, make sure you check the condition of your tires and tire pressure and give her a good drive once you get her started up after sitting for some time. Some good info in the threads below.

Sounds easy enough to do. Sea Foam makes a great penetrating with their Deep Creep.
As for tires, I have a brand new set going on! (Scary story to decipher the date code and realize what you have actually been driving on.)

mine was down two years while i fixed a head stud. just disconnect fuel relay until the oil pressure light goes out then rest your starter for two minutes. then another 30 seconds for good measure
mine fired right up after that
