Cylinder Head Temperature Gauge questions
 

Has anyone installed one? I'm thinking about installing this VDO gauge on my race car. What comes in the VDO kit here on The pelican website? Where would the sender attach to? Does it only goto one bank and not the other? Any info on this would be great.

Some guys love the CHT gauge, some don't.. I have use for it, so it works for me. this has been discussed here before.. some guys prefer one mfg. over another.. so I'm not the last word on using a CHT ga. I use a dual ga. on cyl 2&5.. the probe on my unit is placed under the spark plug, instead of the washer.. a cool set up would use 6 probes.. but most often a single probe is better than none at all.. I would say a simple/nice set up would be a single CHT and a single EGT in a dual gauge. A primo set up would be 6 CHT probes and 6 EGT probes.. which can be set up with a switch to dial in the gauge to which ever cyl you want to view.. I would seek big info before spending the bucks...........Ron

Might be kind of pricey but it gives you a whole lot of info in a small package...

Joe.. not questioning the given info.. but is the JPI 700 the way to go in a 911 for tracking all 6 cyl? and do you know how long the EGT probes last?.. I don't want to monitor gauges, so I've been looking at this unit for 2 years.. the alarm system is important to me.. I want all this monitoring for a carb install...Thanks......Ron

Not sure if the JPI is the best for your Pcar. I do know its considered one of the best for small planes.
Im new to the list and have had my targa for just a few weeks now...

As for the egt probes Ive had mine for about 8 yrs and 700 hours with out any probe failure. From reading the bonanza mail lists there dosnt seem to be a pattern of failures, they just seem to keep going... I would think a porsche install would be easier on the probes, but harder on the wiring.

You might give JPI a call, every time Ive talked to them they have been very helpfull.

BTW, the best place to get one of these is during an aviation show. The dealers are ready to cut deals and jpi usually has a few $100 rebate they give you...

Ron, what do you mean "placed under the spark plug"? Is it washer like that is used in place of the spark plug washer?

yes.. there may be other ways to mount a different sensor, but I believe under the plug style is the best.. the plug washer needed a snip to remove.. I love the CHT ga... great bang for the buck
