Is it possible to tell if a 915 tranny has a factory limited slip by the numbers on the tranny? I'm not asking about a specific tranny that I have access to or I could just check by turning the flanges. I want to know if there's a way in my search for a tranny to verify that it has a limited slip just by checking #'s.
Thanks in advance! |

Yes....
I don't have my sources in front of me...but I recall that a letter code is inserted inside the serial/type number found on the lower edge of the case. I'll look it up soon. As a practical matter, with both wheels off the ground...if you hand-spin one of the wheel, the other will spin in the same direction if LSD....opposite direction if no limited slip. ---Wil Ferch

According to my factory spec book, there is no identifier in serial # for ltd. slip, but I have both, (regular and LSD 915 for '82 SC), so I will try to remember to look and post back.

An easier way is to check the option codes; 220 is the number indicating a slip diff on the 915.

On the very last of the 915's produced, starting around '82/'83, the code '12' stamped between the Type Number and Serial Number of 915's indicated that a factory ZF limited slip was fitted.
