got a puncture today - what tyre combo on 15" wheels on an '86 carrera?

i've tried a search, and it seems that the 205/60 and 215/60 is the combo to use on an '86 carrera.

before i bite the bullet and replace 3 perfectly good tyres what d'ya think, and what are you carrera owners using??

205/60/16 and 225/55/16 seems to be the standard I believe. If you go with the turbo wheels have heard that many are going up to 225 in the front and 245 in the back but you have to play with the ratio (45 or 50) to get them to fit I have heard.

Have Bridgestone Potenza's on my car and very happy with them. Heard a lot of people with Kumho's and like them for their stickyness but they wear out faster. You guys in the UK should be able to get both of them though..

205/50 (sorry not 55's) and 225/50 were standard in the '70s

Tobias Aichele's book, Forever Young, shows 185/70 and 215/60 x 15 on 6's and 7's for an '86.
I had thought they went to 16" years before that.

In my search for tires, I found the tire options for 15 inch wheels to be very limited. Since my 15s are painted the same color as my car, and I wanted to keep 'em, I ended up going with the OE tires: Pirelli P6000s (w/ the original sizes of 195/65 WR15 on the front & 215/60 WR15 on the rear). I could never get a definitive answer about alternate tire sizes for 15" wheels (without rubbing issues), so I went OE.

Actually I think 16" became standard in '89, before that 15" was standard, although probably not the majority. Actually I think cookie cutters and telephone dials were standard until the mid 80's

thats exactly what i have. same brand. i didn't like them on the track. in bruce andersons book he rec. 205/60 fr and std 215/60rr. thats what i was going to do, but then i figure his book was written some time ago, and tyre technology has moved on.......

I picked up my car a few months ago - I insisted on new tires since the existing ones were bald. The dealership wanted to put on Komo, so I covered the difference for a better Z rated tire, Goodyear Eagle F1's - cost me $100 for all four (they found them for a little over $100 a tire onm the web). Anyway I had a chance to play with the new tires and I like'em alot. If you go on to the goodyear website they won't list the F1's for our car (mine is also an '86) - but there out there. Another nice thing is they look great in the wheel well .

Bridgstone replaced the SO2 with the SO3, and I have heard from guys in the club at track days that the SO2 is a better tyre, you may still be able to find some, but in 50 rather that 60 profile

If you decide to go with the 205/60 & 215/60 combination, please update us w/ your evaluation. Although I haven't tracked my car (yet), I wasn't real happy w/ Pirelli's being the only viable option after reading some reviews of them (or rather, the glowing reviews of Bridgestone's, Yoko's etc). Next time around, I'd like to be more knowledgable about what 'works' on 15 inch wheels!

well, just spent 1 1/2 hour trying to find a combo of 205/55 and 225/55, or failing that 205/50 225/50 - impossible! unless you mix brands.

i will ask my fitter tommorrow but it don't look promising.

the only combo i have found so far is in the p6000's 205/60 and 215/60 - so thats looking more likely at the mo.

unless i decide to sell for 16's - eh, nick!

I have Eagle F1's all around - I'll post the exact tire sizes tonight. They are also on the factory Fuchs as well.
