Angry Well, this completely sucks!

Just got this in my inbox - I can't believe that I missed this (not sure what I could have done about it tho...). Any thoughts? How many of you Pelicans are affected?

Important information about Maryland registered historic vehicles

Dear Historic Vehicle Owner,

As the owner of a historic vehicle, we want to make you aware of legislation passed by the Maryland General Assembly that goes into effect on Saturday, October 1, 2016. It is important to know that this legislation will impact how historic vehicles may be operated.

Effective October 1, 2016, a Maryland registered historic vehicle may no longer be used for transportation to and from employment, school, or for commercial purposes.

In addition, historic vehicles with a model year of 1986 or newer may be subject to safety equipment repair orders issued at roadside by law enforcement.

Thank you for your compliance with this new Maryland law.

Looks like Maryland wants to be California..... Wait til they start treating your car registration like property tax. I remember a day when I had a 1978 930 Turbo in Ohio and the registration cost $50 for the next 50 years since it was more than 25 years old!!! When I moved to California I was told to start paying $125 per year, but then they also told me with the engine mods I had that it would never smog in California anyway so just dont even bring it to Cali. Thats not good news for you folks in MD, your emission laws are already the same as CA, they will likely keep pushing for more and more control.

Does this mean that if you are taking the kids to school or driving your classing to work one day and have an accident the insurance does not have to pay?

In a word, yes. Technically.

Just put classic plates on mine here in Washington. Hope it wasn't a mistake.

I get followed a lot in VT cause they only give you 1 Antique Plate and if the Cop doesn't see the front one they follow me, got stopped twice cause the Cop didn't know you only get one plate. As far as driving them to work or any other purpose it is not enforced here.

The "not for work or daily transportation use" has always been part of the deal with Special Interest and Antique registration here in Oregon. But as with many places, unless you pass the same cop every day on your way to work, no one is likely to say anything.

In Illinois, antique plates are cheap and good for 5 years, but are supposed to be only driven to events, parades, etc. I've never been hassled driving my 914-6s with these plates.

They also instituted a new plated, extended use antique, which have an annual fee, are restricted during the winter months like the antique plates, but can be driven daily, to work, etc. during the summer months.

I think it has to do with paying lower insurance rates and be exempt from smog tests.
Tough luck for me here in CA with my 86... Not old enough!

In Oregon, it's a lifetime registration, used to be about $80. Might be more now.

Here in AZ it's actually $25 more per year than the standard registration, but you get 2 plates instead of one and the plates are pretty copper plated (until a few years ago they were solid copper). No restrictions on how you use the vehicle. In fact, yesterday I saw an older Chevy flat bed with a load of lumber on it, a company name on the side and historic license plates!

Talked to Grundy today and they do not change the rate based on the plate - normal or historic.
And in NY the Historic plate comes with usage restrictions so doesnt make sense.

Lately during rush hour, I've noticed a lot of old cars with historic plates. Not to be too judgmental, but by old, I'm talking about cars like a beater '89 Camry. And I wondered how they qualified as "historic". Maybe the state is trying to harden the currency on what counts as historic. I only got historic plates because in Maryland, that allows you to register a set of year accurate plates; in my case, I have 1973 plates on the car. I guess if I'm going to get gigged out if I take the car to work once in a while, I might as well just go back to regular plates.

Here in Minneapolis you don't have to pay sales tax on the car, and it's a one time registration fee. Saved me almost $3000.
