Would You Purchase These Sensors?
I have a 1987 911
Pelican sells the Bosch BMW speed and reference sensors as alternatives to the high priced sensors for the porsche. I called Pelican and they said they now sell FAE aftermarket sensors that are the exact same as the Bosche BMW sensors for half the price---$29.99 (Bosche BMW sensors are $78.50). Have or would you guys purchase the FAE Aftermarket branded BMW sensors or should I simply go with the Bosche BMW sensors? Pelican advised that they sell the FAE aftermarket BMW sensors twice as much as the bosche BMW sensors. What do you guys think? |
Part number please or link?
If they are the same OHMS, why not and not too short that is. |
Have used them on the 911 and other Motronic cars and they work great.
Did get one that was shorted to ground straight out of the box, so make sure you verify before doing the install. |

FAE sensors work fine. I can't say what will happen to them in 20 years, but it isn't rocket science to put a coil in a housing.
I am running them in my car. |
BMW Sensors.
I recently replaced the factory original flywheel sensors with the BMW.
Don't remember what I used for the CHT sensor replacement. No issues as of today. Gerry |
I just read a post from Greglepoure in 2011 where he purchased the FAE and the speed sensor was bad out of the box but not the reference sensor. He said not to purchase the FAE. When I read this along with Racerr 1958 post above where he had a FAE bad out of the box, I think I better be safe and spend the extra bucks and get the Bosche BMW sensors.

Fuch, both senors crapped out on me today, started symptoms yesterday after a 1+ hour run on the freeway to Burbank. Ran like a Bat out of Hell :D. After my meeting I started her fine then drove off then she started to misfire and struggled on acceleration, and I was smelling unburnt fuel  Swapped DME relay, no change.
Came home, pulled each plug and it appears #4, #2 and #1 were missing, strange. This afternoon I tried to start her and she would not start until the 4th attempt. VOILA. Ohmed the sensors, both sensors at 1-3 & 2-3 terminals read "OL" 1&2 were at spec. Temp at 76F. CHTS at spec OHMs. Well, just order two new Bosch BMW sensors, Thanks Wayne for having them :-) Damn BOSCH, only lasted 10 years. |
Has anyone found an alternative for the 3.6 sensors?
|
I sent a message to Glenn Sager at PP. Maybe he can find an answer....
|
If they're made in China I wouldn't touch them.
If they're inexpensive, there's probably a reason for it. |
No alternative for 3. as of yet, the wholesalers have caught onto the swap, so check prices before purchase.

I order by the BMW number,
I have sent the FAE back stating I ordered Bosch. Bruce |

In any case, Pelican Parts can most likely easily do a special order with any one of their multiple suppliers, if they don't stock it. It's good that you phoned Pelican Parts, as all their possibilities for parts availability can't be included in their on-line catalog. |
Products - Revolution and Timing Sensor
Nice web site and informative. Check out Technical Data, Breakdown, and Failure Causes. FWIW, when I tested mine, they put out a strong signal. |
