Strong raw fuel smell 73 t

Hi guys I have a strong smell of raw fuel in the cockpit but I'm sure it's blowing through from the trunk/area . I have attached a photo of what I think is the problem . The vent pipes is floating loose in the trunk . I have a new fuel pump fitted so it's not that . Let me know your thoughts guys

When do you smell it? When starting? While driving? Anything else going on when you smell the gas?

Car running OK? Any stumbling or rough running?

It likely happens when the tanks is full of under hard cornering/ breaking??

There is a vent line that goes to a surge tank under the cowl bt the winshield, then back into the fronk to a missing carbon canister

There is a thread somewhere around here showing a vent line schematic

The car runs good but the smell is constantly there . Probably stronger when I refill . Would anything happen if I blocked of the vent tube to see if it's that . Is it dangerous ..???

I just read fizues reply and there is this picture which is exactly what I have. It looks like I am missing some parts. This maybe due to a new fender but I'm not sure but there is no canister under the front wing. So what are my options , from what I can see the Carbon canister is no longer available new. Has any found a work around for this ?.?!

Italian delivered probably only has a hose from the tank going to the surge tank (nr 1) in the diagram and another hose from the surge tank to the front of the car, so no carbon canister. Check the surge tank under the cowl, mine had a crack which released fuel fumes into the cabin. A new surge tank fixed that problem.

Jonnydaz53, our cars should match because both are Italian models and both are 1973 T
(btw, I live in Italy)

If you need some more photos (global view or details) feel free to ask.

Looking at your photo I can tell that your configuration is right (except for the overfill brake fluid tube that should go into the fuel drain hose, yours is missing and you added a bolt there)

Do not worry, you aren't missing any parts. Your car, like mine do not have a Carbon canister system. (and this is common to many VW cars of that era in Europe).
I've checked this informations with Porsche, Porsche Mechanics, and Friends.

Our evaporative systems are simpler than US and later systems.
A vent line from the tank go to a surge tank and then out of the car.

The surge tank has to be at an higher level than your fuel tank because if you overfill, gas has to come out from the fuel dorway (activating the autostop system at the gas station). If the surge tank was placed at a lower level than the fuel tank, if you overfill, gasoline can spill-out from the vent line (never reaching the fuel door way) and flood the gas station floor.

Also, absolutely do not tap any tube, you do not want the tank became pressurized by evaporating fuel gases (the reason seems obvious: if the tank became pressurized it can explode and if your tank explode you will not detect a smell of fuel but a smell of fire and fumes!!)

Simply check all tubes (also fuel lines from tank to the engine) are in good shape and follow Peterfrans’s suggestion.

If you really have to tap the vent line remove the fuel tank cap and do this tests with the least fuel possible and with a big fire extinguisher near you (anyway I absolutely discourage you to do this, it can be really dangerous for you people near you and your car!!!!)

Hope this helps.

the hose goes through a grommet (lower left side of the trunklid support panel) and terminates in the open air behind the front bumper

I'd prefer to route it out back if just out

A pal spun his Italian delivered 911 car on surged fuel in a turn

Another race car burst into flames when it spilled on a hot brake rotor

If you need a canister contact Mike's 914s: specializes in the repair, restoration, and maintenance of Porsche automobiles
He has a shelf of them

A little off topic and not to hijack... it's always a pleasure to read a Grady's post! (We lost a great member and a good man!)
