First engine drop - re-seal etc
I am finishing my month long engine pull for new clutch and synchro rings project on a ’78 SC I found 2 years ago. The last owner of 16 years never had the engine out and only drove it 10,000 miles. I am guessing the engine has not been out in probably 20 years. I have no proof of engine work, other than they guy I bought it from stating the owner before him said he had the engine rebuilt. I believe it to be the original case with a date stamp (if that is what it is) on the side of the case in circle with a 29/77 – 29th week of 1977? The valves all seem to be tight in the guides, since I have 160k miles on the odometer, I would assume at least the heads have been done. Can you tell by the case sealant if it has been apart? Also the case halves have a matching stamp on top – either 608 or 809 depending how you read it, is that a factory stamp or rebuilder stamp?

Along the way I have also done the following: Clutch Kit, resurfaced flywheel, new pilot bearing; Crank rear main seal; New engine wire harness and distributor signal wire; rebuilt alternator. Preemptively fixed possible oil leak areas or existing oil leaks: New idiot light oil switch, breather cover gasket, oil t-stat o-ring, breather hose, S-hose, cross over pipe, external t-stat to oil tank hoses, oil tank sender gasket, new oil pressure relief kits, oil return tubes, oil cooler gaskets, timing cover gaskets. I have also replaced any suspect vacuum hoses, cleaned the intake runners, installed new injector sleeves and o-rings, cleaned all injectors and replaced the intake boots. Removed and capped the smog pump ports, cleaned and painted all trim. Cleaned cam tower areas, checked tightness of rocker shafts, completed valve adjust, surfaced valve covers and replaced gaskets. Next up is new sound pad installation, clean and repack cv’s. Anything I am missing while I have the engine out? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1474307179.jpg |
Looks like you got it down nice job good research. The case has been split I can tell by the sealant that squeezed out of the case halves.
