Can a 930 be had in the mid to upper 20K range?

Let's just say I'll be making a 'transition' soon. I've found a buyer for my car.

The answer must be NO

After sifting through some ads, it looks like the only 930's in that range are pretty beaten...

Sure, in the '76-'79 range.

You can definitely find one for mid to late $20s. Probably a decent one, also. A real decent one for late $20s. I know a guy that just got one for $29k and it is almost, almost as nice as mine. hehehe. There is a guy on 911turbo.com selling a 79 for $22500. It sounds like it is pretty decent. The prices on these have dropped over the past year, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a nice one. I sure as hell wouldn't look for one in the back of Panorama, though. Tad bit overpriced, they are.

Adam --
It's a relief that you've (evidently) resisted the M Coupe flirtation and I'm quite happy to see another '02/930 guy in the making!!

As for pricing, in April I bought my baby for about $28,000 -- plus a trip to NoCal, which I used as an excuse for a much-needed vacation (slacking is much more difficult than it appears to the untrained eye). Suffice to say, the car is at least as good as advertised and looks better than the pix (at the bottom of the page are links to further pages/information). You can see what I meant about how Yellow this car is in our earlier correspondence.

On a recent 100 best/10 worst thread, some poor benighted bastard (*coughsilver4cscough*) mentioned that some equally misguided "expert" (read: "fool") wrote that heavily modified 911 Turbos ought to be avoided. Let's just say that they require extreme caution in the purchase (total agreement with Milu). I got very comfortable with the seller and his automotive sohpstication/enthusiasm/commitment -- and he with me, which is how we wound up well under his stated $30k minimum -- and I can't describe how much I enjoy this car.

I'd recommend keeping an eye on eBay for a while (which is how I found my 930, although the sale was not consummated through eBay b/c the highest bid at the close was under the PO's reserve price). There's nothing necessarily "wrong" with 1978 or 1979 930s -- and I personally wouldn't go earlier b/c I prefer 3.3 liters, intercooling and great brakes.

Obviously, what little experience I can bring to bear I'm happy to offer -- in the open forum or by e-mail. But for mid-$20's, I'm sure
you'll find something you'll love.

Best,

JP

Adam. . . making me jealous here going for the turbo.

That would be my second choice only to taking an early SC, removing the non-essentials, and dropping in a 3.6. Complete the body with IROC bumpers. Could probably be done under 30 accompanied with suspension mods.

As for the turbo, the previous owner of my car did just that. He found a '79 turbo with a fresh (well prepped) engine for $25K. Good thing about that year (and '78) is the immediate gratification with bolt-on parts. Big HP numbers with different turbos and intercoolers.

Do a search on autotrader.com and check with the local dealers.

Well, seeing how the US dollar is much stronger than the the Canadian dollar, I see many Americans coming to Canada to buy cars. For example, a friend of mine currently has a 1984 Euro 930, black on black, low to average mileage, and he is selling it for $40,000 Can which translates to about $25,000 USD. beautiful all originaal car, 300hp.
think about it, it makes sense.

There is a nice low mileage '76 930 for sale locally. 58,000 miles, one owner car. I've talked to the guy a number of times, but decided it wasn't the car for me. He's asking $20,000, but $19,000 would take it home.

I'm listening...

Those of you who know of these cars, email me with the info. I'm either going to buy an M Coupe or a 930, end of story. What I end up with will depend on the individual car. Thanks for looking out for me!!!

pwd, what can i say? i love them BOTH, but for completely different reasons. if i could even BEGIN to afford it, i'd have both (and more!), but i'm just not in that position right now. i've been offered very fair money for my carrera by a friend, and i feel like the time is right to move to the next vehicle. i've learned a lot with my carrera. although i'm not a great driver, i'm a much more skilled driver now than i was, i think because of what the porsche has asked of me on the road. i've learned that i LOVE autocrossing and anything track-related. i've learned how to work on my car pretty darn well, and have tackled all of my carrera projects except for my tranny rebuild. porsches still continue to be my all time favorites. unfortunately, the kind of porsche i'd really like to have i can't afford, unless i can find a near mint 930 in my price range.

Adam, I think that nice 930's can be had pretty cheap, but I have not checked for a while. They are awesome cars but the market for them is limited by several factors, ie. real or percieved maintenance costs, (the big one), many more buyers for regular 911's, and it's not a "if you have to ask" thing; those who don't have to ask can and do buy much newer and faster Porsches. I would think that it would be a major buyer's market for these with general economy slowing and toys being the first thing to go. My .02.

Adam,

Do a thorough pre-buy on whichever 930 you choose. I (and anybody with some 930 experience) prefer Turbos that have been used regularly. Mine was a garage queen after the death of the previous owner and the son didn't know what to do with it. It has literally "tightened" up since I drive it once or twice a week, or more now. It's still only about as tight as a 70s era Harley, but it is better. May go do a "freshen' up on it this winter. The turbo itself is pricey if it needs replacing (About $1000 for a K27--new ones have boost come on much sooner though ). Everything else is pretty much up the usual Porsche alley--expensive parts!! Many are modified as you will see with new intercoolers, turbos, etc. Guys that bought these cars new in the 80s had some SERIOUS coinage and lavished it on these cars. I have receipts for mine where the guy spent $30,000 just on motor and tranny/diff work back in 1990 with Andial. Another $15K on the stereo. That was on top of the $114K sticker. And I thought I was nuts!! Don't be scared of them, just do the homework.

pwd, I love the Rolex/Timex anology. Be nice though, it's more like Rolex/Citizen
