Unhappy 911SC fuel guage

Took my '83 out for a quick drive with-I thought- a quarter tank of gas. Guess what? out of gas 3 mile from home. Aare the fuel guages this innacurate? Should I replace the fuel sender unit or the guage? Am I just stupid? Or should I just keep it filled?

Also, any reason why I cannot use premium even though regular gas is reccommended?

Thank You

You might want to take a look at the float assembly that's in the top of the tank - occasionally mine will stick but always seems to work itself free. Maybe yours needs to be "adjusted" or replaced.

BTW, I run 93 octane in mine.

I think your gauge is off. It definitely should be more accurate. On my 79SC, I also get a low fuel level light that glows, although I must admit I've never seen it but a couple times. It seems to come on with one or two gallons left. I checked this a long time back by filling up and seeing how much it would take to get me back to 21 gallons (going from memory, I think that's what mine holds) after the light came on.

I do have to tap my gage sometimes for it to go to the correct position. I tend to use mileage to support the gage position. I just reset my odometer every time I fill up. My SC is very predictable as to MPG around town.

I've run tests with 87 and 93 octane and basically have noticed no difference in mileage or power. The only difference is a lighter wallet.

The only time I use Super is when I add Techron a couple times a year.

Your guage is off. I keep track of my gas mileage and how many miles are on the tank. Much more accurate than the guage most times as I try to never let the tank go less than 1/4. My '83 runs just as well on super as on regular, also. I see no reason to waste energy and money on super when I "see" no mileage or performance gain. 3.0Ls are not high performance, high compression motors that require special fuel. Use high quality fuel (such as Chevron, Texaco) and run Techron through the system as recommended.
