I.D. this part and win a prize!!
OK....I lied about the prize, but help me figure out the what/where of this part......
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/part.jpg It is what it looks like.....a large rubber grommet, about 1.5" in diameter, with a 1" hole. This goody came in my official, super-duper Porsche Top-End Gasket Set. Didn't come across anything like this when I pulled the motor apart, so now it's a leftover. Whatiszitfor? Will my freshly rebuilt motor blow-up without it? |
isn't that the grommet for the alternator wire harness where it passes thru the engine cover?
|
That's the rubber doughnut. When you see a cop in the rear view, pitch it out the window.
oh wait are you sensitive? |

And, please, enough of the do-nut/cop quips....this is a serious technical quiz....:D |
Bill, shush, you never know what might happen when you make jokes.

Doug's got 3100 posts he ain't going nowhere. :)
|
Got one of those too in my kit, did not use it, and still don't know what it was for.
|
Sorry, I don't recognize it, but it does look like a wiring harness grommet and it probably is, but for a later (or earlier) model. When they put these "kits" or "sets" together they usually try to cover as many models as possible, so there's often (usually) something in the kit that isn't to be used on your particular car. If it doesn't match up to anything you removed when you took it apart it probably isn't meant for your car. In fact I'm surprised this is the only "left-over" part from the "kit" usually (of course I'm more familiar with American iron here) there's several left-over gaskets or O-rings or etc. that were put in a kit so it would be correct for several model years.
Just my opinion, Jerry M '78 SC |
Good call, Jerry.....there were a few other strange bits in the kit I did not need/use.
yelcab....at least we have some things for the next swap meet ;) |
Okay,
How about the grommet where the oil filler neck goes through the body? |

I'd say it definitely seems to be for wiring, but if so, why would it be in a *gasket* kit?? |
That's the fabled Super Carrera Grommet! Worth at least 20HP, maybe more. Be warned though it will subtract a like amount of HP from inferior non-SC engines. ;)
|
I think thats for the smog pump hose that goes through the engine tin to the air injectors... by the way I need one...

Replacement grommet for the O2 sensor plug perhaps?

I dug up the part number for the smog pump gasket, then looked at the contents list of the seal kit, and it was listed, even for a car without a smog pump. Thanks Doug, this saved me some head scratching in a month or so. I picked up the same gasket set today, thanks to my $100 PCA certificate. Tom |
That looks like the wiring harness grommet for the hole under the dash (close to the glove box).
I pushed a bunch of amplifier wires into the trunk through a grommet that looked just like that (not what you'd expect to find in a top end gasket kit, though). |
I'm putting mine on E-bay.

THE WINNER!

I do believe you are da..... winner!! I looked it up in the parts book, and it's #911 113 146 00 For '75-'79 air pump equipped motors. You can claim your prize (the grommet) by sending me an e-mail with your postal address. Thanks all for playing along. |
Actually it has nothing to do with the engine! Its for the AC hose to the evaporator which fits through the wheel well!!! Sure could use one of these....................
