Help needed with cruise control wiring (88 carrera)
I could really use some help from fellow Pelicans on the wiring of the cruise control module.
The cruise on my car has never worked, and while I don't miss it, I would like to get it working as a project. PO removed the computer, probably because it was dead, and while wiring for an aftermarket stereo probably figured there was no point in reinstalling a non-working cruise. I'd consider buying a working cruise computer, but want to make sure I'll know what to do with it. Bear with me, on these naive questions. So - first photo and question: this appears to be the two mounting points under the dash, right under the radio, is that correct? ![]() I have seen the parts diagram, which shows a small metal bracket, so perhaps the cruise module does not bolt directly to these points, but requires the bracket?? Next photo and question. I believe the cruise stalk wires are show here in the photo, and these must attach to the cruise. ![]() Last part is the hard part. What else connects to the cruise computer, from this jumble of wires? I believe the cruise stalk, the clutch switch, and the electric servo all have to feed in here somehow, but I need some help in identifying things. This photo shows a black plastic connector, and some brown wires which are all candidates. ![]() thanks!!

yes there is a bracket, and there is a little box (CPU) sitting under the radio. i have never taken off the plastic cover on the end to figure out how the cables are connected. mine is working and in a place like Oz whith all these ridiculous speed limits it actually works quite well to keep me out of trouble.
![]() let me know if you can't find anyone to get you the info, then I'll have a closer look & take some pics.

There's no separate bracket. There are two bracket "ears" riveted to the sides of the box, and are used to mount it to the two mounting points in your first picture with machine bolts.
All electrical connections are via a 12-pin plug on a wiring harness that should be hanging in the vicinity. It looks a lot like that small connector in your last pic, but bigger. I've been under there a thousand times and that small connector doesn't look familiar to me. Hopefully it's not a broken 12-pin cruise control connector. |

+1 one the 12 pin. If it's not there, then give up now.
The other connection goes from the stalk to the wiring harness which then feeds into the large 12 pin. But if I remember correctly, it's a circular (white) four pin connector. I'm just going by memory since I recently took mine out. There is nothing else connected to the computer, separate source of power ect. |

Okay, does the second photo look like the white connector coming from the stalk?

Megerian -- I have an '88 and will take some pix to see if it will help out. The cruise computer is still installed and the wiring is still factory (along with the stereo). Give me a few to get the pics.

I used the Bentley schematic on pg 970-62 for my initial troubleshooting. Ended up that when I replaced all my brake light bulbs with LED bulbs I lost the "ground" that the computer was looking for when the brake is not applied. Reinstalled the standard incandescent bulb in the third brake light position and the system works great now.

For the last two posts, I appreciate the input, but I am not trying to troubleshoot a non-working cruise computer. I am trying to determine how to wire in a new cruise computer, since mine is missing.

Hence the reference to the Bentley schematic.

The box under my dash has a bracket on it and attaches to the bracket in your last picture. The wires that come out of the part you are missing is a wire harness, with no connection, and dissappears. The cruise control computer, per the bentley pictures, is under the hood next to the brake master.

Sorry for the delay, i took some pics and will post tonight. The wires come together into a 14 pin wire harness that plugs into the cruise control module. If the PO cut off the wire harness you might have a tough time getting it all back together.

Okay - thanks - hopefully your pix will help make some sense of the wires. As you say, if you wiring harness is gone, I may just punt on this project.
