Lower Valve Cover

I just removed the lower valve cover to adjust valves and noticed what appears to be thick plastic on the cover that has been partially removed. What is this plastic? Thanks

Maybe a ham fisted porosity fix.

You should replace those lower covers with turbo covers.

What improvement do turbo valve covers provide? Why replace the existing covers?
Thank you.

Turbo covers are built much sturdier and they're not prone to warping and leaking+they look cool.

If they do not leak then finish your job and replace them....if they do then get the Turbo's at some point.
That 'fix' won't hurt anything whatever it is.

More raised ribs on the cover...they add rigidity to the alloy and help stop warpage and leaking.

Thanks for all the feed back.
These covers don't leak so I'll put them back on the car and hope they seal tight.
By the way, I've looked at many pictures of magnesium lower valve covers and none have the thick plastic coating that my covers have (or had). Is it possible that lower valve covers originally had a baked on plastic? The plastic is about 1/4 inch thick.

Porsche did the plastic coating for noise control.

I'm going back to mag covers myself. Not that hard to true them up each valve adjust if needed. And RSRs ran them.

I had a 75 911S that had lower covers with thick plastic on them. The plastic would melt and harden on the cover nuts, so to remove the covers, you would have to chisel the hard plastic off the nuts. If sound reduction was the factory's goal, not a very eligent solution. Rob

Okay! That's what is on the covers, thick plastic that has been removed over the years. I presume the under lying metal is magnesium, correct?

A 76 should still be mag as I recall.

Shops often true them, if warped, using a sheet of glass (flat surface) with a light grit paper on it.
Go slow and check often for true/flat.
