Question Valve job without oil change???

Hey all,

I just got a valve service kit (gaskets, nuts, and washers) to put an end to leaky valve covers. So, I figured I would adjust the valves while I'm at it. I always drain the oil before a valve job. However, I just changed the oil about 500 miles ago and would like to be able to do the valve job without changing the oil (Mobil 1 ain't cheap!). My questions are: Is this do-able? (anyone ever do it?) and: How much oil should I expect to drain from the sump into the valve covers if the car sits overnight? Any input would be appreciated.

Why not drain the oil...put it back in? Clean drain pain, screen on the funnel, etc. But, hell...I change my oil (mobil 1) twice a year. Often, that's less than 500 miles.

If you jack up one side at a time with the tire about 3-4" off the ground, you probably won't lose a cup's worth on either side ...

Jack the car up on one side, pop the covers and adjust those valves. Reinstall the covers. Then jack the other side and do same. You will spill very little oil this way. Really no need to drain the sump either.

The only catch is you cannot do the valves in the firing order since you are only doing one side at a time.

Don't forget to adjust valves cold.

Just jack up one side of the car and that will prevent the oil from coming out of the exhaust valve cover. Do all the valves on that side of the engine (do #1 then rotate 240 degrees, do #2 then rotate 240 degrees, do #3 then rotate 120 degrees, do #5 then rotate 240 degrees, do #6 then rotate 240 degrees, do #4), then replace the cover and jack up the other side. It works just fine.
