3.2 Motronic Question ("whine" after fuel line replacement)

OK, so a few weeks ago I developed a leak in the fuel hose that runs across the back the of the engine between the two fuel rails. I replaced this hose, but in order to do it with the engine in the car, I removed the fuel pressure damper from the passenger's side fuel rail (back there underneath/behind the air filter box - fun) and then disconnected the fuel line from the pressure regulator on the driver's side and pulled it out. I replaced the hose and assembly was the opposite of disassembly.

Start it up and no leaks, runs OK, etc. What I did notice is that at constant throttle at around 2.5-3k rpms I get what feels like a slight miss or hesitation - it almost feels like somebody is gently applying the brakes. Very slight, but noticeable.

Also - and this is weird - in the mornings on the way to work a "whine" develops back there in the area of the pressure regulator. This whine comes and goes but happens every morning on the way to work. The weird part is that it only happens on the way to work in the morning. Every other time I drive the car - no whine. When the whine is present, it is loud. The only time it has done it when I could try and see where it is coming from was in the parking lot at work in the dark, so all I could tell it that it seemed to be coming from the area of the regulator.

So...is the occasional whine and the slight stumble related? Did I mess up some connection to the pressure regulator (it is hard to get to, needless to say)?

Any ideas?

I whine about going to work every day too. I fdon't think the source of my whine is the same as your car's though.

OK, a bit of a bump and a couple of questions...

1. Could a failing (or incorrectly connected pressure regulator) make noise like a loud whine?

2. How does one remove the whole air filter box/throttle body from the top of the engine? I had everything disconnected that I could find, but there appeared to be one last point right under the air filter box between the #5/6 cylinder intake runner that was holding it on. I fought with that for probably 30 minutes and couldn't get it off.

Mike,

There is a nut back there which is hidden. Reach around or use a mirror and you will see it.
