I just finished a 74 heat exchanger swap out on my 81 SC. I am REALLY PLEASED with the added power and have no oil or exhaust leaks...except between the 2 HE flanges and corresponding muffler flanges. I installed the copper gaskets that came w/the hardware pkg and tightened them thoroughly, but still getting a sputter. Is there a thicker, maybe asbestos gasket available or should I make one? Thanks!

Walker makes a sealent paste, it comes in a tube and it has this sort of grey clay which U apply insted of the gasket and when it dries it provides a perfect seal. they use this stuff for ralley race exousts here in Europe. its also very cheap about 5-10 dollars per tube which is basicaly more than U will ever need

Hi temp RTV works, or so I've heard. I've got some on my exhaust gaskets as an experiment. The real fix is to take the HE and the muffler off and either use a large, wide file or take them to a machine shop and grind the matins surfaces flat and true. If the surfaces were flat and true, there would be no leaks.

S2,
If you loosen the 4 M10 bolts and the 12 M8 nuts on the heads, then tighten the muffler bolts FIRST, then retighten the nuts to the exhaust port flanges ... your leaks may go away. Be suse to loosen the two muffler bands before starting, and tighten them last, and they don't need to be real tight ... it's not as if the muffler is going anywhere ... it can't possibly fall off! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |

If all the above fails, take one of the old gaskets to a known good muffler shop. This is the way I got rid of an imperfection in my wonderful welding job. The shop had the exact size as stock except they were thicker and a little softer. Worked like a charm.
