Help pricing a 86 911 Turbo please.
Hello guys, I have a client selling his flawless 86 930 (Turbo) 52k miles. I am wondering what a realistic price range would be for one with all service records & up to date? Thanks much for any help!

Prices range from $15,000 - $40,000 depending on mileage, condition, service records, etc...
Does "flawless" mean it is physically clean? Does "flawless" mean it has perfect mechanicals? When was the turbo replaced (or was it)? How about the clutch? Tires? Brakes (including calipers)? Any past body work or paint? Is the car stock (most are not)? There are soooo many things to consider. We need to know more about the car. How about a pic?

In the good days (last summer?), that car would be worth more than $30,000. These days... dunno. I don't trust Blue Book for pricing an emotional purchase like a 930 - spend more time checking out actual asking/sales prices online.
Having all service records is a big plus, so is a clean chassis (no wrecks). Some people really like stock engines - others like mods. Tires, honestly no real big deal (<$800 will get you a set). In all honesty, convince your customer to wait for Spring to sell (especially in Indianapolis).

still holding...
As little as two months ago these late 80's turbos, prime examples that is, were still selling for prices of six months ago or even longer. I was looking, and even on ebay these models were meeting high reserves. My guess is that the values are holding fine. Never quite understood why a stock, though mint, Carerra turbo would be so desireable....
Post some pics. Chances are there are still folks looking for these cars and it won't take long to sell, even if he wants something over $30K.

I thought I'd share my purchase with you so you can have an example of relatively current market pricing. I purchased my car, 1986 930 with 29K miles, in August for $32K even. It had great maintenance records and is in the kind of condition a car with only 29K miles should be. (read: very clean but not concours)
That said, I think today a patient buyer can pick up the car in question for as little as mid-high 20s. (27K or so?) On the other side, a patient seller could probably get as much as low-mid 30s for the car. (32K or so?) It is really a matter of timing and conditions in your area. As Emission said below, buying a 930 is an emotional purchase, and that is true regardless of the economic environment. If you are patient and lucky, you will find a buyer that will give you what you want for the car. (assuming the price is reasonable) I think the market may be softening just a little for these cars as their owners may be a little more desperate to realize the cash. It will be interesting to see what happens to the market value of the 930 if... I mean WHEN the economy recovers. (I don't want to hi-jack this thread but would love to hear others thoughts on the future value of 930s if anyone cares to chime in.) |

Dougster, you will see an "IMG" button at the top when you reply. That will allow you to attach an image.

I bought my '86 930 from a close family friend in June of 2002. It had 119,000 miles on it (new clutch and new turbo) on the original engine. No oil leaks, flawless condition in and out (perfect paint and like-new leather), and all service records ($32,000 worth!) showing 3,000 mile oil changes.
I paid him exactly what the dealer offered him as a trade-in value - $22,000. At the time, I estimated it was worth about $29,000 (what the dealer would have asked). I keep the car garaged (and covered) and drive it weekly. I don't expect it to ever drop below $20,000 in value, so I won't ever lose my shirt on it. If the engine does blow, I should be able to raise my selling price another $5000 to cover the cost of my re-build (do it myself) and get $25,000 for it. I speculate the value of the 930 will steadily increase over the years, but I don't consider my car an investment. Right now, the market is a bit soft... but it will come back.

Emission, sounds like you got a great car for a fantastic price. You are right to call out that it is foolish to consider an automobile an investment. That is the biggest mistake one could make. However, the fact that the 930 holds its value reasonably well helped me make the jump when I did.
I have always wanted a 930 and knew that I would own one someday but I actually made the jump a little earlier than I thought I would based on my previous cars' depreciation. I was in a Nissan 300ZX that was built up pretty extensively. (450hp or so) After it was all said and done I have a 10 year old Nissan with 30K miles that I had dumped over 30K into. At the time the new Z was about to come out so I decided to test the market before the new one hit the streets. I was happy to get $25K for that car and put that money towards the 930. I don't expect to make money on the 930, and in fact I don't think I will ever sell it, but in the end I believe it will hold its value better than most cars out there. I agree with those who have suggested that this is a temporary soft spot in the 930 market. I don't think that the market is TOO soft right now and I bet that this is about as low as it will go. Either way, I am going to enjoy mine and not worry too much about it. |

IMHO, asking price is a bit steep in today's market. For comparison, I just sold a friend's '96 993 for $38,500 with 51,000 on the clock!

Thanks again guys. I hadn't gotten much response on it and its such a clean example that I thought it might be on the high side as well.
Our service trys to help both sides get a fair value! I do value your thoughts on the subject and thanks again! Happy motoring!
