Fender mounted oil cooler

I will be installing a 3.2L on my 1970. ,.i will be installing a fender mounted oil cooler.
I don't like the idea of running the lines under the rockets. Is there a reason to install them there? Has anyone use other alternatives inside the cabin ? I would like to use copper and plumb them . Any related threads out there?

Prolly because the factory chose to mount them there. They are able to release heat to the atmosphere. If you run them in the cabin, you will be pretty toasty. You could run them thru the longs, but very expensive. Route them outside and be done with it.

Don't use copper. It has a tendency to work harden and can break.
Used lines appear from time to time on the parts forum or buy some from Elephant Racing.
Have seen a few installs here with braided hoses used instead of the brass lines. They may be somewhat more durable but will not reject heat like the brass factory lines do.

+1 on what Bill said about not using copper. Did that decades ago on a VW & experienced cracks.

I would think that copper, in a high vibration area, could be an issue.

Mounted solidly to the bottom of the chassis where the stock lines go, shouldn't be a high risk proposition. You can mount the lines rigidly to the body, so they don't bend/sway/etc. That isn't a "high vibration" area...

Those lines are hard to come by as they cant be shipped. They are run where they are because the lines do most of the cooling. If you have a battery box on the right side any cooler will by mostly ineffective as the battery box blocks it completely. No way to get a fan in there as the cooler sits very close to the battery box. Its better than nothing but keep an eye on temps. May need a front mounted cooler.

They actually can be shipped, but a very strong box is required. You should contact Len from Auto Sport Engineering in Stow, MA - BoxsterGT on this board. He can either help or point you in the right direction.

There is a great pic on the board of how Len crates the lines. Very well done, though probably not all that cheap to ship.

I was at Len's shop a couple of weeks ago, and he had a set of lines ready to ship in a box made of 2x4's and plywood! I said that's got to be expensive to ship! I forget what he said, but it was like $40 to the West coast, or something crazy cheap like that. I don't know what kind of witchcraft he uses with FedEx, but according to Len, it's not that bad.

If I remember correctly, Elephant racing ships their lines in a big box that is extra thick cardboard. It is just an odd shape that requires a customized box. But they can be shipped. Mine arrived without any damage.

Used lines are the cost effective way to go. Factory lines and most importantly, the thermostat with pressure bypass is engineered to work with easily available parts.
The stuff is available from Pelican/elephant and a host of others.

You might want to consider enlarging the air inlet to the fender cooler, blocking off the bottom from the front valence to the cooler to get more of the air going through, not under the cooler. I will be working on this soon.

So what is the alternative to adding a fender oil cooler to a 70--3.2 without removing the right battery box? Or any other body modification for that matter (want to keep it all original). Maybe a trombone cooler?

I'm mounting a 4" fan, there is just enough clearance with a battery box for a Spal 4" pusher. College football depending, I plan to get to it tomorrow and will post pics.

Ditto on running lines outside. Your cabin will be warm indeed if you put them inside and if one were to rupture it would be an ER visit for sure and possibly worse.

I got a cooler from BatInc.net that is the size of a sheet of paper, roughly 11"x8". It fits perfectly.

Thanks Matthew they are right up the road in Bradenton. Have used them before. Did you use stock lines to the cooler? Any pics?
