harness bar question
 

My winter project is new race seats and harnesses. I've been looking at harness bars. Brey-Krause builds a harness truss to mount your harnesses. They also talk about some of their bars as guides only and not mounting points for the harness. I know a lot of people that mount their harness to the the harness bar. How do you know if the bar will take the forces of an impact? BK talks about their truss meeting DOT seat belt anchorage standards. Are all bars tested for loads? Any suggestions for harness bars/harness set ups? I think I may mount to the rear seat belt attach points. Has anyone done this?

Did this last spring. PCA regs say that your harness must be attached to the rear seatbelt mount points if you have a harness bar. The only exception is the Brey-Krause Harness Truss which is approved for direct attachment. (or a roll cage!)

I went with the Performance Products bar as this was one of the few that does not compromise seat movement. One thing to note was that you must have a harness with at least 65" shoulder straps to reach the rear seat belt mount points. Standard 50" is not enough. Most H-type models are 70-80" long and will work fine.

Thanks for the info. The local PCA's must not enforce the rule because all the harnesses I've seen around here are attached to the harness bar. Thanks for the harness length info. That really helps. I tried to find performance products. Do you have a web site for them? I need all the seat travel I can get so their bar sounds like a good choice.

I recommend buying the harness pads too. They go on the shoulder harnesses adjacent to your neck. If you chose not to buy them, I guarantee after your first full day with the harness, you'll want 'em, as your neck will be rubbed raw where the harness goes over your shoulders...esp on the right side from reaching for the gear shift.

You will also need a set of 4 metal fittings and one quick release style fitting for the anti-sub belt (between your legs). As well as an eyelet bolt to go thru the floor where the anti-sub attaches. Racer Wholesale has great customer service and will be able to fix you up with everything you need. I suggest calling rather than ordering via internet to ensure you get all the hardware req'd.
