Need to replace syncros, what else should I do at the same time?
 

Howdy P-heads! Over the holiday I put together a plan for my 930 and it is a rather large (for me at least) project which will include a number of mods. Before I get started I want to address a small issue with a syncro that is showing a little wear and tear. It is not totally blown, but I am going to fix it anyway so that I can take full advantage of the power mods I plan to add in the coming year.

I want to make sure that I take full advantage of my mechanic's time so is there anything else I should consider doing while he's chaning out the syncro? I am open to just about anything so lay it on me.

best to do a full rebuild as necessary, rather than just the syncro. there will be plenty of parts inside that are somewhat worn.
it's easier to do a valve adjust on a 930 when the engine is out. cheaper too. the clutch should be looked at. oil leaks from the engine thermostat, oil light switch and breather hose are easier to get at too.
tighten all the intake nuts. they're always loose on 930s. CV joints probably need servicing. boots as necessary.

Yup... nice way to spend a quiet day in the garage too.

THANKS JOHN! That is exactly what I was looking for! That sounds like it was just off the top of your head, I would like to compile a complete list and prioritize based on what we find when we get in there. Any other suggestions?

Since you are having the tranny gone over, could could change some of the ratios for shorter ratios, and really wake up the performance of the car.

if you can afford it, a cam change makes a real nice improvement for street driving. the SC grind works well. webcam hard welds and regrinds the SC profile on your cams for around $600. plus approx 12 hours labor (in a well equipped shop with the engine out) to swap them. improves low end a lot for city driving.
a monty muffler to replace the cat/muffler unit also is nice. minimal, if any power increase, but without the cat, the temps go down considerably, and it sounds better.
