Euro H4 "City Lights"
For those of you that have installed the city lights in your Bosch H4's, how have you gone about wiring them ? I am planning on running a wire from the parking lamp connection at the fuse box. What would be my best option as far as a ground ? Running a wire back to the chasis ground ?
Thanks, Ron |

On my '85 I just made a "Y" harness and inserted in-line in the connector located in headlight bucket wiring. There was already an extra (unused) ground connector. A very simple upgrade!

On the H4s you have only the power to the little Bulb it will get the Ground trough the socket by the Main Bulb . harald |

I have wired the city lights in my H4s already, too. The smaller bulb sockets are self-grounded to the buckets as are the main bulb holders. I just ran power down to the bumper parking lamp ciruit. The added load was not enough to burden the wiring, switch, or fuse. It's a nice, quick, and simple upgrade.

I just put a set of H4s on my Targa and saw the small sockets. What size bulb is needed for the city lights?

I have been thinking about the H4 upgrade. Does anyone have some close up pics of the upgrade. From what I see in shots of other cars the lamps are alittle longer then the stock type. Would I be able to reuse my headlight trim? Do I need to get something repainted to match my car?

You can use the H4 setup in two versions. To maintain your current US look, just replace the current sealed beam headlamp with the H4 version (Hella) and you can use the replaceable H4 bulbs.
Or, you can replace the whole bucket assembly including trim rings with the Euro conversion, a very different look, but you will need to have the trim rings painted to match your car color. US version trim rings do not work. I prefer the Euro look myself. Cost for Hella conversion is about $75 to $100. Cost for Euro conversion anywhere from $150 used to $300 new. I got my set on EBAY for $160 used but had to have trim rings painted for another $150. Good luck! ![]()

Has anyone hooked the city lights up as DRL's? Would the be bright enough to be seen?

In my opinion they are not bright enough for this application in braod daylight. The bulb would be bright eough, but the reflector is set up for headlamp projection - the parabola isn't really calibrated to reflect the bulb in the smaller socket. It can be seen, but it wouldn't get your attention if you weren't looking for it.

I have also heard through other sources that there are halogen upgrades for the city lights...can't remember where I saw them.
These may be bright enough to be seen for DRL's but... The thing about a DRL module though is that is usually runs only 60-75% of full power hence the reduced output. This would make the city lights even that much more dim. I know you can custom wire to avoid a module but I think the module handles everything nicely..plus it is hooked to my emergency brake to turn the lights off. I run DRL's in all my cars. Save the flames, works for me and proven itself many times over. I run the H-4's with DRL's. Simple setup. -Jeff nolift911@hotmail.com |
