Erratic Idle Troubleshooting

Like many, it seems, I've got an uneven idle in my '82SC that starts out over 2000 rpms when real cold, remains over 1800 almost until full operating temp, and when fully warmed idles around 1100, wandering up and down 100 rpms or so.

According to many, the O2 sensor may be the culprit, as well as vacuum leaks. I understand the diagnostic tests described in the Bentley manual, but if they fail to point the finger at the O2 sensor or system, how does an amateur go about looking for vacuum problems? Bentleys doesn't seem to go into that.

The car starts easily, except for a couple stumbles after it fires. As the car warms up, it runs strong, it seems, (had the car 3 months), but something is definitely not right. I don't know when the O2 sensor was last replaced by the previous owner.

idle problems

I'm amazed that no one has suggested anything! I thought this was such a common problem with numerous causes, and that SOMEONE could give me a heads up on it.

I guess I'll start testing stuff....

Most of the problems with erradic idle are vacuum leaks. I found this on my car, now it purrs like a kitten. A good way to look for leaks is to spray carb cleaner at the hoses. If the idle revs when you spray, there is a leak there. Be careful with carb cleaner though, keep a fire extinguisher close by just in case.
