Are you sure you have put enough in there? It takes a lot more oil than your Mercs. Between 12 and 14 quarts. And then you need to get te oil hot so the thermostat opens and it starts flowwing to your oil cooler in the right front wing.

You can check the level with the dipstick in the filler neck. The engine needs to be running as you do this and the oil needs to be at tempature.

Congrats from another newbie to the Pcar family. Yeah...lots to learn...steep learning curve.

The oil thing threw me off too. Heck, even the first time I filled gas was interesting. Yesterday I installed a new momo steering wheel and looking for the battery made me feel like an idiot, then came disconnecting the thing lol.

Good thing our gracious host has one of the most comprehensive websites I've ever seen and not only can supply you with all the parts you'll need but the DIY guide as well as friends to help along the way. How amazing is that?

When you top off the oil, make sure you check it at full operating temperature, with the engine running, parked on level ground and only fill it halfway between the min and max on the dipstick. The gauge should read halfway as well at this point also. While driving, it often goes to 0, that's normal.

You don't want to overfill the oil on these cars, they will suck oil into the breather hose and make a big mess (and LOTS of smoke).

Welcome Vdub!!! Nice looking car!!! Yes make sure there is enough oil in car. Check oil with engine running and warmed up. Take it for a drive before you check it. The gauge some say can't be trusted. Mine work fine. When you are driving the oil is in the engine so the gauge will show red. When you come to a stop on level ground the gauge should come up. The sending unit I think is in the oil tank not the engine, so when you stop the oil makes its way back into the tank and the gauge moves up. When you start driving again the oil goes back into the engine and it goes to red.
Again nice looking car. Where are you located.

Congratulations on what appears to be a beautiful car. When people say warned up, really they mean hot. With as much oil as these cars hold, it takes a drive down the freeway or to the store and back (depending upon where you live) to get the oil hot and the thermostat open. Then when you pull back into the garage make sure you set the parking brake and leave the engine running and then check the oil after it has had a minute to level out.

When I buy a new (used) car one of my first maintenance tasks is to do a oil/filter change just to set a good base line and see that there are no suspicious metal materials in the oil.

Good luck and enjoy that beauty.

Thanks for all the comments...

Yeah maybe i havent gotten it hot enough for it to move....pressure gauge seems fine....
Haydon bros PPI showed no concern....hopefully its just me

Last recorded oil change is at July 2015 600 miles ago, from the local purchaser who got it from Chicago.

Question about insurance....do you guys go with your regular Insurance on these, I have AAA for 3 other cars....my online hagerty quote with agreed value and 1500 miles/yr was almost the same cost of the AAA i have....i dont know which direction to go in...

oh and few more pics

Congrats on a beautiful car & cute riding partner. I'd go with AAA if the cost is close to the same. Seems like you might get a better quote with AAA since you have your other cars with them. Have fun.

yeah, i guess ill have to see if getting it as "collector car " insurance is worth it or just standard...

how does insurance define collector car....I know with my benz, its 31 yrs in our family, priceless to me, for if god forbid got in accident, insurance wont fix it, they will dump it...because its value is 500$ to them im sure.....i dont know if an 89 porsche with 72000 miles on it is the same consideration

an agreed value policy seems much better imo. you can get that through hagerty with your benz too

I use hagerty simply because they understood the collector scene better and was able to insure my car for the market value, and not what the black book value was.

I to use Hagerty and have an agreed value. They would probably insure your 89 for 50k or better. Also find the market value for the benz and get an agreed value on that too.
Hagerty may be more than the others but I haven't heard a bad story about them yet.

Sure, Hagerty is better for agreed value coverage, but watch out for limited use restrictions. They're not into insuring what takes you to work every day.
