Flasher relay no Flash .
 
Good morning all , hopefully this is a quick question that someone has run into before. I hit a bit of a pot hole that jarred the car a little. On the very next turn I had no flashing for my turn signal.
In troubleshooting I realized I had no flash on my turn signals or 4 ways. All light bulbs intact. I tries reflowing the relay as I may have broken a solder joint but no luck.
As I am running out of nice days I got a 4 pin relay locally ( Novita) instead of the german one from this site as I would lose a week of driving.
it has exactly the same pin out with even the terminal markings the same.

With this one the outside all works fine again but me left and right indicators in the tach seemed fused together and both flash dimly at the same time when turning left or right. .

Has anyone seen this behavior ? What I am trying to determine is
1. is it just an incompatible relay and I need the german Wherle relay
2. is the problem somewhere else and the problem is in fact not the relay , this relay just manifests the problem differently .

Thanks for input from anyone who may have experienced this.

Have you checked the ground for looseness or corrosion, the jarring may have dislodged it or moved it to a corroded part of the ground that is why you are still get a light dim.

the original relay is very bright , just doesn't flash .. I will certainly double check ground though . The reason I think the light is weak with the new relay as the current is trying to power both left and right indicators on the dash .. That's what makes me think the new relay is just incompatible . I was just wondering if anyone else had seen this.

I have my answer .
it was as I had suspected and my relay is bad . the replacement I got although functional is NOT fully compatible.

My buddy came over and we put his hella relay in and it worked great , put my hella in his car and no flash, put my replacement in and both signal lights in the tach flashed, same as my car.

Where is the flasher relay located?
I have a new LED compatible relay to install in place of the original.

For some reason aftermarket parts store flasher relays, even with the same electrical connections won't work in German cars. I've had this problem with VW and Porsche. Could be the flash frequency or the internals..but if you use the original part number and get a euro relay..they work fine. Order from our host.

Zippy..To find the flasher relay..turn on your emergency flashers and listen..should be behind the fuel gauge..I think. Don't be surprised if the LED flasher will not work well in a 911

Thanks DB. As I am replacing the turn-signal/headlight stalk I have the battery disconnected and the controls out, but knowing the approximate connection helps. Also the steering wheel is out so I can easily pull the gauges out as needed.
I am replacing the stock relay with a LED compatible relay because I upgraded the turn signals with LEDs. I hope it all works out.;)

Thanks All . I wanted a wherle relay from out host but being in Canada and only a couple of weeks of driving season left at the most i went local . The one i got local was a novita . Since I cant take it back i took it apart to see the difference.

Ours has a separate circuit completely for the internal indicator and has two coils . The supposedly compatible one only has one relay circuit and is designed to indicate one flashing light on the dash .. thats why its dim as it thinks there is only one light and has them shorted together.

the location is accessible from the frunk area and its a pain in the butt. lift the frunk and look through where the hinge is on the frunk through to the back of the instrument cluster. you will see it . its a square relay plugged into a round rubber base which has a rubber niple which slips into a hole in the body.

make sure your frunk lid is securely supported before jamming your hand in there because if it comes down while your hand is in there you just crushed your hand.
getting the socket out of the relay is really tough as the relay has barbs to prevent it falling out ,, the rubber base will pull out of the hole in the body, which is fine coz then you can pull it forward to change the relay .. good luck getting it back though as you have no leverage. i put dish washing liquid on the rubber nipple to make it easier to shove through the hole but still no luck. i just left it till i get my new relay.

Good call on securing the frunk open; I always use a stick and not rely on the shocks.;)
